I was all set to get Goldie inspected Friday afternon. I pulled it out into the driveway and started it up, left it idling, and went in to get my wallet and helmet. Came out and smoke was rising from the side cover! Seems that I forgot to redress the power lead for the running lights on the chrome chin, and it was against the exhaust pipe. Stupid me!!!!!

Now I get to chaqnge out the harness, and hope that the regulator, and my new high output stator, are still all right...

Thanks, Mike! Luckily I have a spare harness to replace it, but geez, I just got done putting the fairings back on!!

Great to hear from you again, my friend! Hope to see you this summer. Hopefully will be back together for Carl's M&E next weekend...

Wow Bob that sure looks nasty. Good thing you have a spare wire harness too. Even then you're looking at some serious wrench time. Like you said I hope you fried nothing more than wire.

Gotta get the beast done before Don's M.D 3 weeks away. Good luck.

I got to see that gooey mess of melted tape and insulation first hand when we visited Bob yesterday. Luckily Bob is an electronics specialist, so that major job will be well within his capability. When we first showed up, it looked like Bob was untangling Christmas lights with all the wires in his hands, upon closer inspection it was his wiring harness. I wish you good luck Bob. Hope to ride with you soon! I took some pics too.

Yep, once you let all the smoke out of all those wires their no good anymore. Look at it this way, you bought the bike to have something to do and now you do.:confused24::D

Damn Bob! You're making me nervous. We have been running in sync on our projects and now this. And I don't have a spare harness for mine. I just finished up my new wiring today and am hoping to have the bike ready to put all the plastic back on by Monday.

I ran out to the garage and took another look at all the wiring I just did on mine and double checked it again. Added a couple more zip ties and tightened things up. Now I'm going to have nightmares.

Well at least you know the stator is turning out some amps.

Hope it comes back togther quick for ya.

Well, now you know what a proper size, and properly wired "" Fuse,""" is for.

You're right as rain, George!! Seems that the line was tied into the brown (switched) line by whoever installed the chin when it was new. The scary part is I'm thinking it was done by the dealer!

Part of the harness swap is going to include the fuse update, as conveniently there is already a new stryle fuse strip on the spare harness...

Bob,

DANG-IT, that hurts just to look at !! BUT you can do it !!

Keep your head up and stay with it, be done before you know it.

when i left Bobs yesterday, the bike was partially torn apart and the wire harness to be installed was ready to go in. i am sure he has made some good headway on a project that most people would not attempt.

thanks again Bob and Becky for your hospitality.

Bob......if it make ya feel any better you aren't alone on the headaches. Thought I was close to closing mine up tomorrow but not gonna happen. I was going over the bike today double checking all the work I had done and went over the wiring for the third time since reading your post.

Had the carbs on the bench and was going to put them on today and decided to change the fuel filter before I did. Geesh! Glad I did. The filter was about 1/3 full of sediment. Pulled it off and cut it open and it's rust. A lot of rust. I installed that filter new last spring and put about 7K miles on the bike during the summer. The tank looked good and didn't show rust when I bought it. Opened up the fuel level sensor and took a look. Appears to be about a 1/4" on the stuff in the bottom of the tank.

So tomorrow instead of putting on the plastic, I'm pulling the petcock and going to try to clean her out. Wanna try to avoid pulling the tank if I can.

And I opened the carbs up. Rust sediment in the fuel bowls pretty good to. So another good cleaning is in order.

I'm like you Bob.......I wanna ride. Just ain't meant to be I guess. :bawling:

Hope you are coming along on the harness.

Well, the harness I was going trlo install has toasted wires due to a bad ground wire frying, and another harness that I started to tear apart to just replace the fried wires was in perfect shape, so it's back to plan A, replace just the toasted wiring. ..

:sign yeah that: ... I agree!

Bob I must also say that I admire your patients and sense of commitment... it’s certainly a labor of love. You’ll have all that much more to feel proud of on your next ride!
