rdhc Posted May 6, 2009 #1 Posted May 6, 2009 Does anyone carry extra fuel on their bike. I am going on a trip that has some long stretches between fuel stops. I can probably make it, but thought it might be a good idea to have a little extra fuel on board. I did a search on the web and found some folks carry fuel in a MSR aluminum bottle. Thoughts or comments?
91nwl Posted May 6, 2009 #2 Posted May 6, 2009 Thats what most of us use. You can get them at REI or other camping type stores. Two of the 33 oz bottles will get you about 20 miles further down the road in a pinch. Wrap them in towels or something with duct tape and put them in the saddle bags. I would empty them when you don't need them, ie, only fill them on the scary stretches.
GaThumper Posted May 6, 2009 #3 Posted May 6, 2009 Does anyone carry extra fuel on their bike. I am going on a trip that has some long stretches between fuel stops. I can probably make it, but thought it might be a good idea to have a little extra fuel on board. I did a search on the web and found some folks carry fuel in a MSR aluminum bottle. Thoughts or comments? I've used MSR fuel bottles to carry extra fuel on my dual sport since it has only 2 gallons and a range of about 75-80 miles. I carry two of the large bottles and that gives me about 1/2 gallon of extra fuel, good for about 15-20 more miles. I've never had a problem with these bottles leaking and they are bounced around severly on a typical off road ride! I'm guessing you would want a lot more than 1/2 gallon extra? You could use lot's of the MSR bottles, or maybe get a different container. I know there are 5 gallon fuel containers that the jeep and FJ folks use. There's a really neet one that is almost flat for carrying on the roof rack. Maybe there is a 2-3 gallon equivilent? I like this "Geri" can, but it is probably too long to be useful on the bike. Dimensions are 3.25" x 34" x 13.5". I'll keep thinking about this. Are you thinking about something that will fit in the saddlebag? http://www.expeditionone.biz/Geri_intro.htm http://exp-one.com/prototypegallery/albums/userpics/10001/geri1.jpg
BoomerCPO Posted May 6, 2009 #4 Posted May 6, 2009 I know guys who carry extra fuel with them all the time......they add SeaFoam to the gas so it does not go bad. They use the metal bottles as well. Boomer......who's lucky enuff to live in a big area with lots of gas stations and would rather carry ice, bourbon, and Twinkies in the saddlebags.
GaThumper Posted May 6, 2009 #5 Posted May 6, 2009 Interesting... http://www.tourbuddy.com/bikes.shtml a good post from pashnit... http://www.pashnit.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4396&postcount=4 another tour tank... http://www.tourtank.com/ flatbed fuel cell for fjr1300... http://www.fjr1300.info/misc/tanji.html Acerbis makes two tanks for off road bikes that might be adapted to street use... http://www.acerbis.com/p150_tank/11250006.html
RedRider Posted May 6, 2009 #6 Posted May 6, 2009 The Tourtank works will and is easy to plumb in. I have the 3 gallon version. Just got back from a long trip and it was essential in the strong headwinds. My mileage was knocked down to almost 25 MPG (driving 80 MPH into a 30 MPH headwind). On long trips before I got the Toutank, I just filled a 1 gal plastic gas can and strapped it next to the cooler on the trunk rack. Perhaps not as safe as the MSR cans, but cheap and had it around already. RR
sarges46 Posted May 6, 2009 #7 Posted May 6, 2009 Just a little gallon container on the cooler rack of the camper trailer when on long trips.
rdhc Posted May 6, 2009 Author #8 Posted May 6, 2009 Thanks for the info. I think I will try a couple of MSR bottles in my saddlebags.
N3FOL Posted May 6, 2009 #9 Posted May 6, 2009 I 2nd the idea of a one gallon container that is made specifically for flammables. It is plastic and small enough that it can fit anywhere in the Venture bags. If you are travelling alone, a 2 gallon container is a good choice and I would just put it behind you on the passenger seat.
friesman Posted May 6, 2009 #11 Posted May 6, 2009 Ive ordered a couple of theses from cycle fuel, they dont hold much gas, but it will keep you moving a bit closer to gas stations. They are shaped right not to take up too much space and are guaranteed not to leak. http://www.cyclefuel.com/ Brian
