nucpharm04 Posted May 4, 2009 #1 Posted May 4, 2009 Hey guys, new member here. Love the site. I am having a problem with my intercom system that I am hoping someone can help me with. I have an 08 RSV. I recently bought J&M headsets for the factory intercom system but I am getting an annoying buzzing sound that changes with engine rpm. I had the same problem with Chatterbox headsets. I thought the high-priced J&M's would fix the problem but they didn't. The J&M guys at Bike Week said there is something wrong with the bike. My dealer could not fix the problem. I tried ferrite chokes but that didn't work. I took off my battery tender thinking I had a short but that didn't work. Any suggestions?
loehring Posted May 4, 2009 #2 Posted May 4, 2009 That sounds like a resistance issue. Could there be something with the plugs or plug wires? I remember that happening in an old car of mine and it was plug wires that were bad. Maybe someone else has a little more experience.
Sideoftheroad Posted May 6, 2009 #3 Posted May 6, 2009 Try moving your handlebars all the way to the left and then all the way to the right and see if the noise goes away. Sounds strange I know, but try it and let us know.
sarges46 Posted May 6, 2009 #4 Posted May 6, 2009 I moved the wires under the seat a little and it helped....
Bob Myers Posted May 6, 2009 #5 Posted May 6, 2009 If moving the wires helped then it is an inductance problem. Try rerouting your wires as to where it comes across a plug wire or near the coil that the offending wire is as close to 90º as possible to the wire that is feeding your voltage. Possibly even try running a shielded feed line. Make sure the shield of the feed line is grounded on both ends.
nucpharm04 Posted May 7, 2009 Author #6 Posted May 7, 2009 Thanks for the info guys. I will be working on the bike this weekend. I will let you know how it turns out.
nucpharm04 Posted May 11, 2009 Author #7 Posted May 11, 2009 Well, the moving the handlebars all the way to the left and right did not fix the problem. I did get some improvement when I moved some of the wires under the seat. The buzzing noise went away but now I have a ticking noise that changes with rpm. It definitely has something to do with the wire going to the passenger intercom. If you are plugged into the rider intercom you don't hear the tickling noise but if you are plugged into the passenger port, you do. I will continue to investigate and let you know if I can get it totally resolved.
Cowboy Posted May 12, 2009 #8 Posted May 12, 2009 I found that while re routing the passengers intercom cord and putting the dielectric in all the fittings that this removed the ticking noise without having to add a noise filter.
tonyc Posted May 13, 2009 #9 Posted May 13, 2009 I had the same buzzing. In my headset was a bare wire going to ear piece. I was lucky, taped it up and now its fine.
Marcarl Posted May 13, 2009 #10 Posted May 13, 2009 You are most likely getting the sound from the frame. Either your high tension are running too close to the frame or your intercom wires are running along side the frame. Try getting one or the other away from the frame, or else creating a shield for the intercom wire.
nucpharm04 Posted May 13, 2009 Author #11 Posted May 13, 2009 Thanks guys, you have given me a couple of more things to try. I appreciate it. Hopefully I can get to work on it in the next few days. I will let you know how it turns out.
stardbog Posted May 13, 2009 #12 Posted May 13, 2009 Your Bike is under warranty, tak'em to dealer to deal with.
nucpharm04 Posted June 25, 2009 Author #13 Posted June 25, 2009 Hey guys, Sorry it has taken so long to get back to eveyone on this. I finally broke down and took stardbog's advice and took my bike to a second dealership. The first one could not figure out the problem. I had better luck this time around. The problem is fixed. I guess the tech had to take the seat and tank off to trace all of the intercom wires. Apparently it was touching either a coil or spark plug wire and picking up the interference there. Re-routing the wires solved the problem. I guess I won't give up my day job to become a motorcycle mechanic as all of my attempts failed. I want to thank eveyone again for their help.

davecb Posted June 25, 2009 #15 Posted June 25, 2009 Always remember....If your bike is under warranty....TAKE IT TO THE DEALER...Let them go through the headache of fixing it.......
