Question re: Progressive Rear Shock

I am planing on changing the rear shock soon on my 86VR. The Progressive 420 is a little expensive, but if it makes as much difference as when I changed the fronts forks to Progressive it will be worth it. My question is do you still have the use of the class system on the bike and how much difference can I expect to see?

I believe the Class system goes away...but i'll let the more knowledgeables (I.E. those with more knowledge) speak to that.

BTW..I think the make a rear spring that keeps the venture shock and therfore the class. you may already know this. bob

No I'm pretty sure the air system is not needed if you have both front and rear.

My 89 came with a progressive suspension sticker and the CLASS system still functions, so I don't think it's a progressive rear shock.

 

I believe it has their springs front and rear because I run no air pressure in the front and override the rear below L when riding solo (240lbs +) because it's too stiff if I don't. 2 up (at least 400lbs) I run the rear on M and the front on L. It also sits about 1" higher than stock.

 

I don't have any of the suspension complaints I hear from 1st gen riders with stock springs.

 

So, based on what I think I have, I highly recommend use their spring on your stock shock.

the progressive front springs are a dream, every first gen needs them

 

as far as the rear, i bought the progressive rear spring and put it on the original rear shock and i hate it. the navigator also finds it a much harsher ride and does not like it either. i played with all kinds of pressures and rebound adjustments and still not happy.

 

i will be putting the original spring back on.

I was wondering if the ride got too hard, I'm thinking about changing everything to the Progressive 420. So would it be better to just change the spring or spring & shock?

I think the Progressive 420 rear replaces the shock and spring.....

Anybody else got a suggestion?

The Progressive 420 is a replacement spring/shock combo. You have to do a manual adjustment to the shock, by way of a threaded nut, before you install the shock. There will be no air connection from the CLASS to the rear shock. The CLASS will only supply air to the front forks.

 

Let me know how it was to change the rear shock, preferably with photos!!! I have researched this, but have yet to do it. Maybe in the fall... !!!

I was hoping to find someone that has already changed them out to see how the ride is. I really like the Progressive in the front, best $60 ever spent, but trying to find more info about the rear.....

I will remember to take photos of the change out.
