N3FOL Posted May 6, 2009 #26 Posted May 6, 2009 I am keeping an eye on this thread. Am also interested on what works aftertermarket wise for a LED strip that can be installed as a replacement to the OEM LED on the wing. Has anyone checked with Custom Dynamics strips?
YamaDuck Posted May 6, 2009 #27 Posted May 6, 2009 See if something like this will fit. They are very bright and look great and come in 3 different lengths. http://www.chromeglow.com/catalog.asp?prodid=563990&showprevnext=1 This works on a wing also.
BigBear Posted May 9, 2009 Author #28 Posted May 9, 2009 you are only gettinga 25% increrease in light output. I would probally be looking for a 300% increase in light output. If you are replacing a 180 degree LED with a 20 degree LED they will look brighter from directly behind, but a lot dimmer or not at all, off axis. What are teh LEDs currently on the board? Update: Josh @ Lunar Accents (mfg of the LED strip in the Yamaha spolier) gave me the complete specs: Lunar Accents RED LED = 1000 mcd, 20mA, 30 degree beam LEDs like this are VERY common. There are quite a few LED peddlers that have Red LEDs in the 5000-15000 mcd (brightness) range with 30-90 degree beam angle (viewing angle). Bright enough for ya, KiteSquid? Looks like I will be in business soon! I'll keep you posted on my progress.
Cougar Posted May 9, 2009 #29 Posted May 9, 2009 Yud Da Man Walt.. I am very excited on how this turns out! Thanks for doing all the hard work for me Jeff
edger Posted May 10, 2009 #31 Posted May 10, 2009 I just got mine and will most likely install it on Monday. I am really not too concerned about how bright the lights are just that I get any more light back there. I am really anxious to see how this all turns out though. Will be watching!

southoboston Posted May 11, 2009 #33 Posted May 11, 2009 I know you guys are talking about spoiler LEDs, Maybe these guy's can help. The link is good for a 7 more days http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Royal-Star-Venture-LED-Brake-Running-Light-Bar_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a317Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem4ce7f2fbaaQQitemZ330308975530QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories I bought one for my bike
KiteSquid Posted May 11, 2009 #34 Posted May 11, 2009 I already have one of those, but I also would like to have light, higher on the bike, like the spoiler, so the second car back has a chance to see my brake light. I prefer the styling of the Yamaha spoiler, but the light is not bright enough for me. I like the 15" light bars, but to mount one on the trunk lid, I would have to either first put on a trunk rack and secure the light to it (IMHO high on function but low on form points) or would have to custom injection mold or machine a mount to fit the curvature of the trunk. I am REALLY excited about what WaltH is brewing up right now!!!!!! Of course it will be the highest priced option, but will look the best, IMHO.
Flyinfool Posted May 11, 2009 #35 Posted May 11, 2009 I've been looking at data sheets for LEDs. All of the 4,500 - 17,000 LEDs are fairly big and REQUIRE a heatsink for cooling. Walt Since you have the unit apart can you measure the physical size of those LEDs so that I can look for a brighter replacement that will fit the same circuit board pads?
BuddyRich Posted May 11, 2009 #36 Posted May 11, 2009 Just replace the crappy rubber lense with red plexiglass. The LEds are plenty bright enough like that. I did and they they are fine. They are red in color anyway
Cougar Posted May 11, 2009 #37 Posted May 11, 2009 Buddy what type of plex did you use? and were to find that piece? Thanks, Jeff
tnt05venture Posted July 23, 2011 #38 Posted July 23, 2011 I would also be interested in where to find a piece of red plexiglass. Where did you find it Buddy?
BuddyRich Posted July 24, 2011 #39 Posted July 24, 2011 I got it from CA when I was out there at TAP Plastics. I can make up some red lens to use as a replacement. I'd charge 22 for a lens. Anybody interested let me know or just send a paypal to buddyrich@ebmc.com. I'll see if I can get some pics of my current setup on here in the next day or two.
Hawque Posted August 27, 2012 #41 Posted August 27, 2012 I see some spoilers have a red lens while others have a clear lens. Which is which? I prefer the clear to match the rest of the lights on my trike and trailer.
