I am slowly getting this thing up and running. 86 VR 21000 miles.

Does not leak when off or with key in on position.

Shortly after I start the bike, gas starts running down the front coil of the rear shock and pukes out on the ground.

I have pulled the fuel pump and tried to trace back all the gaslines I can see. Looks like it's leaking from above the rear shock mount and down the front of the shock? Cant see the actual leak.

The PO left the tank on reserve and I have not moved it. I drained all the gas at the fuel pump and put a bit in today to get the bike running.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Pull gas tank cover and air filter box you'll see four lines coming from top of carburetor going towards the gas tank. Gently pull them out on the frame side and run them outside the frame of the bike so you can see the ends. Start bike (it won't run exactly right) and then follow back up and get float unstuck in the carb that's leaking. It's an overflow for when the carbs gets stuck.

Hubby was dictating this to me on the phone. Gotta take care of our other first gens.

Wow- right on. It's the rear right when sitting on the bike.

Now the tough question- can I fix without removing the carbs?

Thanks

Go back to your first post.. this is all related to your original post about the 'phrams.. Your carbs need a GOOD cleaning.. Sounds like the bike had sat for quite a while. You can't just pull a bik out of storage and expect to jump on it and ride without a lot of work typically.

You may be able to peck on the side of that carb with something to dislodge the float valve. You can also drain that carb and when you refill it, it may flush any debris out. It does sound like a good cleaning will help you, but you will need to make sure if you clean them, that clean gas is filling them back up. You may have some trash in your tank that is coming through.

Start by draining that carb bowl.

Then run a can of Sea-Foam fuel conditioner, in about 1/2 of more tank of gas.

Then, Drain ALL the Carb bowls, Each has a drain hose. #2 Phillips on side of each carb to open the drains.

This is a common trouble.

Also keep running Sea-Foam ( or other good fuel injector Cleaner ) for 3 or 4 tanks of fuel.

Also, good idea, to Completly Drain your Gas Tank. At the PetCock, right side.

Drained gas tank and bowls. Am going to fill with seafoam through the fuel pump and let sit a couple days.

.

Really don't want to take off carbs yet

Thanks

By the Time you will have them found not satisfing, you could have been riding for three Days ..

Honestly, in your Case, Seafoam finally won't help . It will help to some Point, but after that you will find yourself taking the Carbs off and cleaning them anyway. So, why not do it now and be done with it for a long Time.

I find shortcuts to usually be the longest path...

Well, give the Sea-Foam about 5 days, before complete carb pull apart !!

It has worked for many folks, !! Also, open the " Idle Mixture Adjust Needls " ( Pull out the lead seals ) and Clean and Adjust the needl valves. too ( 2 1/4 turns open from full bottom out position ) ( Very carfull not to damage the very fine threads !!! )

Use, Liquid Wrench, to make sure you don't damage threads. Work slowly on this. !!!!
