SaltyDawg Posted April 26, 2009 #1 Posted April 26, 2009 Watch out when the weather gets bad. I know I have been less than brilliant and rode through some VERY BAD Lightning Storms before. I will be pulling over and letting the weather pass from now on. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,517985,00.html Motorcyclist Killed by Lightning While Riding Back From Charity Event Sunday, April 26, 2009 LAWRENCE, Kan. — A 45-year-old Lawrence man was killed when he was hit by lightning as he was riding his motorcycle as storms swept through northeast Kansas. Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig says the man was with six other motorcyclists who are members of the Bikers Against Child Abuse group. He was hit by lightning about 5 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 24 between Perry and Granville. A man riding next to the victim was treated and released at a Topeka hospital. The other five members of the group were not injured. Herrig says the motorcyclists were returning home after visiting some children they had helped in the past in their work against child abuse. He calls the man's death a "tragic, sad thing."
Monty Posted April 26, 2009 #3 Posted April 26, 2009 The poor guy helped battered children, and look what he gets....makes ya wonder, huh? No one is safe, no matter what. Just be as careful as you can be, and NEVER ride in a storm.
BuckShot Posted April 26, 2009 #4 Posted April 26, 2009 No one is safe, no matter what. Just be as careful as you can be, and NEVER ride in a storm. Sometimes you don't have a choice. Back in 86 on the way to Florida, no place to pull over. Overpasses full of cars and everyone was doing 10 mph. Lighting hit in the field probably 50 to 100 yrd off the expressway. Talk about scary. Its to bad about the rider. I'm sure there will be a special place for him.
loehring Posted April 26, 2009 #5 Posted April 26, 2009 One thing I've done in the past was to fold down the antennas and tuck them under my legs. It may have no scientific merrit but I feel better without looking so much like a lightning rod.

MiCarl Posted April 27, 2009 #7 Posted April 27, 2009 Something about that tucking it between my legs just don't sound right. RandyA I take it that that takes ones mind off the lightning.
highwayrydr Posted April 27, 2009 #8 Posted April 27, 2009 If you want to get technical, lightning rods resist getting struck due to their pointed shape. The electrons wont discharge to the sharp point. They do not attract lightning like a large ball. One thing I've done in the past was to fold down the antennas and tuck them under my legs. It may have no scientific merrit but I feel better without looking so much like a lightning rod.
