Electrical Fire

Tuesday evening while riding home from work, the 18 wheeler that was ahead of me was flashing it's brake lights at me. It was not dark yet, so I thought that perhaps my headlight was out and I kept riding.

 

About 5 miles later, I smelled something that smelled like brakes burning and I attributed the smell to the truck that was flashing his brake lights at me. About a mile later, lots of smoke from under the instrument panel.

 

Being between off ramps, I decided that I could make it another 1/2 mile to the next exit, so slowed down and kept going. When I was exiting I-80, the instrument panel burst into some flames. I pulled off the road, shut it off, pulled my stuff out of the trunk, dialed 911 and ran to the nearest house for a bucket of water. By the time I got back there were 3 foot flames.

 

A bucket of water didn't do much. The fire department put it out within about 3 minutes.

 

I had time to pull the fairing today to find about 10 inches of the wiring harness gone. All of the relays are gone, of course the windshield, the clutch hose and switch are burned up. Headlight adjuster knob is oblong shaped. Throttle cable is a bit crispy... ignition switch cover is gone. Both side panels on the fairing are melted. Emergency flasher switch is melted. Right hand mirror inside trim and rubber boot is melted.

 

I have a spare wiring harness and am considering a rebuild.

I would need:

Clutch hose from lever to hard tube.

clutch switch

L and R side panel covers

R mirror

windshield

relays

emergency flasher switch

instrument panel and cover

 

 

Any idea what that might cost?

i would warm up the windshield and straighten it back out..

Interestingly enough, I pulled the windshield up while it was still hot to allow access to the instrument panel for the fire department. I saw someone with a fire axe and I wanted to save it from further damage.

Wow...sorry to hear about your loss...but it could have been worse. Sounds like you were givin a few clues along the way. Anyway...hope you can patch her back together.

 

PS I hunted for years out of Ridgeway in Elk County...saw you were from Clarion which isn't too far from there.

I have a clutch hose if you get to the point of repairing it. Unfortunately, it might not be worth it.

Tim. Sorry to see a good bike get toasted. I'm a little confused. The tank cover is gold royale yet the bike fairing looks to be black and the R&L dash look like a standard. Was the bike pieced together from several??? Or??

It was a project that someone never completed. Has one brown bag and one black one too. It needed rescued.

I have a problem with being enamored with inanimate objects with motors. Still have my first dirt bike from 1976.

I could probably help you out with a mirror, clutch hose if you don't take the other one, 4 way flasher and some of the relays. The plastic pieces are going to be a little hard to find cheap. Just keep watching ebay for those parts but the dash parts tend to be pricey. Sorry, but I already gave away my fairing panels... PM me.

LOL.... Always wondered what an 'Ebay' bike would look like. Every piece of plastic on it from a different year. Kind of like a patchwork quilt. It would be unusual.....and nobody'd want to steal it...

Is that a vacuum port on the lower left? Possibly the ignition advance module??? You guys know all the smart guys got to go to Vogel and are heading home now!!!

the Part off Ebay is the Vacuum Sensor for Spark-Advance.

My electronic something vacuum advance pressure sensor is intact. I don't peruse Ebay much and noted in previous posts that people have had issues with them, so I was passing it along to someone else who might be in need.
