I'm gonna tackle the task of resoldering the computer display

 

Before I tear the whole fairing apart, can comebody tell me if there is an easy way...ie go in thru the headlight or whatever. Or do I really have to take the whole fairing apart?

You can get to the dash assembly by removing the windshield assembly and headlight cover then head light itself you do not need to remove headlight frame work just head light this way you can get your hand behind all the wiring and frame work, the dash has four screws two on each side, loosen two screws on each side plus removing two on each side then the dash cover will side toward the handle bars leaving behind the dash assembly ,once these are out of the way you can get better access to the bolts on the backside and also helps removing the speedometer cable .Since your in there its best you lube the cable while you have it apart.

I tackled the computer monitor tonight. As I was following the instructions above, I realized just how much time I saved by not taking the whole thing apart and figuring it out. The whole job, including the soldering, and buffing the windshield while it was off, took about an hour. No more blinking red light, no more running out of gas, and no more low oil warnings at 70MPH.

And as a bonus, no more rattles!

John, when you are ready to tackle 2nd gear, there are some of us that have used the same gear sets, just doing an undercut. You could probably get by for less than $100 doing it yourself. About the only thing you will need to buy will be some gaskets, a thrust washer and the oil.

I put over 60,000 on mine after doing the undercut on the dogs and probably would not have had another problem if I had used the new and improved thrust washer(thicker and harder). I just flipped mine over.
