ADC Posted April 22, 2009 #1 Posted April 22, 2009 Just looking at my banking online and I see a charge for $350.00 to some online clothing store in Holland, someone got my debit card info and went shopping,I've sent emails to the company and I'll be calling the bank first thing in the am,don't know what else to do right now but I really feel the need to hurt someone.
Marcarl Posted April 22, 2009 #2 Posted April 22, 2009 At least they chose a good country to buy from.. Hope you get it straightened out soon,,,we Dutch don't like that sort of publicity, and I don't think you like forking out any money to cover somebody else's expenses.
dragerman Posted April 22, 2009 #3 Posted April 22, 2009 That happened to me once and as it turned out who ever was doing the spending was spending less then my wife so I let him keep the card!
bongobobny Posted April 22, 2009 #4 Posted April 22, 2009 I agree with Charlie! $350 is nothing. The last time somebody got our card number they recked up over $2000. The credit card co mpany called us before we were even aware our account was compromised..
Beau-Kat Posted April 22, 2009 #5 Posted April 22, 2009 Yup. Happened to me too a few years back. Thief got a $750 plane ticket from Orlando to La Guardia. Opened a Dell account and tried to open a Gateway account. Gateway called me to verify, but Dell just let it go right through. Thief never got a computer though and JetBlue got a reverse charge for the ticket they approved. I lost no money, but it was a hassle for awhile.
Gray Ghost Posted April 23, 2009 #6 Posted April 23, 2009 That is why I use a credit card for most things. Your liability is different on debit and credit cards. I have had a card taken once, and someone got my number another time, but so far the companies have covered all losses.
Midrsv Posted April 23, 2009 #7 Posted April 23, 2009 A couple of years ago someone was charging on my AMEX account and ran up over $20k from online merchants from Europe to Singapore. AMEX took care of it but it was pain for a few months. DT
FROG MAN Posted April 23, 2009 #8 Posted April 23, 2009 Yep a credit card is the safest way to make a transaction. They monitor your transaction for suspected theft. Thats why you may have to enter your zip code or other info while traveling. For everything else we carry Identity theft protection.
SaltyDawg Posted April 23, 2009 #9 Posted April 23, 2009 Dang Aurthur, you mean to say Brandy isn't the only one this has happened to? We we went to the Va Beach Meet and Eat and stopped at that Ski Shop to get Brandy a pair of Ski Pants for the ride home one of the girls there stole her information and popped us for $1,000.00 the day before we were to leave on Vacation. Lucky I was paying attention and caught it, went to the bank and they were able to see where it was done at as well as give me their contact info. Ours hadn't hit, I just noticed a BIG chunk of the money not available, the company stopped billing me for one of the charges and then returned the rest of the money once we got a police report and had the detective contact them. Folks have said $350.00 isn't much, well in my book it's a lot. Most of these folks will only spend less than $500.00 at at time because then the police won't make too much effort to track them down. Ours just happened to have been for $490 and $495 dollars, but they were done within 24 hours so the police combined them into one and started an investigation. Come to find out the address to where the stuff was delivered was had just popped up on their "Watch List" so they got more against the people now. Good luck, make sure you have the bank check the charges that haven't posted to your account also.
similost Posted April 23, 2009 #10 Posted April 23, 2009 My wife and I just got new bank cards in the mail the other day.. I was wondering WTF? My card is still good for another year and a half.. Start reading the paper in it, and apparently one of their "third party" vendors had their system compromised, and our information may have been stolen... SO.. new cards.. The bank never said who it was that leaked the information, and now we have to activate new cards with new numbers... which is a REAL PAIN IN THE ASS because I have a few automatic payments coming off of each of the cards, plus other accounts we have out there we'll have to change the info on before we can just click use this card.. Of course the bank was polite in their letter and said "Thanks for your business"...
