I had some work that needed done around the house Saturday. So I went for a ride. I was out for around nine hours and put on maybe 400 miles. Here are a few pictures I took along the way. The first place is called Hanging Rock. It is located on the Wabash River near Salamonie Reservoir in northern IN. This lone chunk of rock juts up out of the ground almost 100' where the rest of the landscape around it is pretty flat. This unusual (for northern IN) geological feature is known all over the world. It's only a few feet from the road, but when the leaves are out on the trees, it's completely hidden from view. Amazingly, it's not hard to climb to the top of it. The next two pictures are from the top looking out at the river, one to the east and the other to the west.

The next two pictures are the covered bridge in Roann, IN. It's a dirty little town, not much to look at. But this bridge is in excellent shape. It's open to traffic, but the main road has been routed around it with a modern bridge, which is where I took these.

As for the house project work, well, we'll see what happens next Saturday.

I thought of you that morning, but had no way to get a hold of you on short notice (like a phone number in your profile - hint hint). This was an extremely impromptu ride for me. I did have one errand to make in Huntington, but then instead of turning around for home, I kept going. And then I went a little farther. And then I went some more. Before I knew it, the day was about gone and I was still an hour and a half from home. I actually ditched some of the back roads I wanted to explore on the way home and got on a straight highway to make a little time.

Hanging Rock is really something to behold, at least for us northern Hoosiers who live in flatlands. The picture doesn't do it justice. The scale is lost. That thing is just huge. I've heard tales of people repelling down the steep side of the thing... :whistling:

I might have some more work that needs done this Saturday too. You never know.

You can only ride West Hamilton Rd. so many times before you wish for something else.

Yeah, I was waiting for someone to comment on that. It's truly the case. I have a project ready to go here that I want done but don't really want to do. I intended to come home and do it, but my bike just wasn't into making U turns that day. There was one spot I planned to see near Huntington and was hoping for something worth taking a picture of, but there was nothing there. After that, I just kept going. I was so unprepared for that long of a ride, I had to be careful that I had enough money for gas and something to eat somewhere. But I did have my county road map with me, without which it would have been impossible.

Michael, do you have any interest in tracking down remnants of the old Wabash-Erie Canal bed? That interests me because it was started here in FW and is such a piece of our history. The stretch on Redding Rd. by the Vermillyea House is plain, but when I started looking for it, I was amazed at how much of it can still be seen across the countryside and in several other towns. I could lose a whole week of days tracing it around.

These pictures and some other places I have in mind for a ride sometime. Not sure when that will happen though. There are a few things to see in northern IN, but you have to look around for them.

Well, see, that was the best part. The wife was gone on a business trip anyway. She knew nothing about it. (Actually, she rented a Harley Softail Deluxe herself that Saturday where she was and did some riding of her own.) The project I skipped was my own anyway. Most of them are. She just chuckles at some of my projects. I've been working on this one a few nights this week. Maybe I can keep Saturdays open. I couldn't have dug an 18" deep 50' long trench through my yard all in one day anyway.

Hey pegscraper, as I have mentioned before, I used to work in Ft Wayne up to the mid 90's. In my times there and riding around in the company car, I never did see much of a hill unless it was an overpass. Then again, I am from the mountains of east Tennessee and we have hills close by that go up to over 6,600 feet.

If you ever get a chance to come to this area, please let me know and I will take you on some roads that will scrape your pegs plum off. :happy34:

Thanks for posting and I enjoyed the pictures.

We haven't been able to get down there to see my brother for a few years. Maybe this year. We owe him a few visits. Lori wants to ride her own bike down there so she can ride around herself. She does like riding her own bike. She wants to go hit the Dragon.

I miss living in eastern Ohio where we had some hills to ride on and around. Indiana is too flat for me.

Northern IN is pretty flat and boring. Southern IN is much better. How long have you been in FW?

Are you going to the M&E in Osgood this Saturday? Another member here is going also and it sounds like he has some nice roads picked out to hit on the way down and back.

I have been in FW since 2000 and Nebraska before that. Actually I havent lived in Ohio since 1990 but I miss it. I wish I could go down to Osgood but I have a few things I have to take care of Saturday morning before I get to play. Was hoping to get out for a nice ride in the afternoon though.

Hey Lynn, you could just head that bike down and join us! Leave the house about 7:30 (after you explain the trench to your wife so she can get it done!) and be down here by 10:30! You could be home by nightfall!
