HELP - Shift Peg Covers

Just received the Kuryakyn Shift Peg covers and am having a bear of a time trying to remove the OEM rubber covers from the shifter. On my other bikes I was able to muscle it off over the end of the shift peg without cutting (or otherwise damaging) the OEM rubber.

 

Anybody have the Kury shift peg covers installed? How did you get the OEM rubber off? Did you have to cut them off? I don't want to reinvent the wheel here; I'm sure somebody out there knows the trick and will share it here. Thanks!

I haven't tried this, although I have felt the firmness of the rubber covers. I've considered the Kuryakyn covers myself. You might try a heat gun to soften the thing, or try prying it with a screwdriver and squirting some soapy water underneath it, or both. Just some guesses for you. Shoot, try a gear puller.

Are you sure they don't just fit over the stock rubber on the shifter and tighten with a set screw. The Yamaha brand goes on that way. Figured the others would too. That leaves you with the stock if you ever change your mind.

The Kuryakyn shift peg according to their web site is designed to encapsulate the existing peg. There are two different styles.

 

KY-8851 is the slip over the existing peg

KY-4034 is a clam shell version

I have them on my 07. Take a small flat blade screwdriver and work ththe rubber over the end of it. You should be able pull them off after that. A little prying from the screwdriver and you will be good to go.

Using one hand, work the screw driver all the way around it in cirlces breaking it loose from the steel rod it is on, and at the same time pull on it towards you with the other hand..It will come off, but is a slow process..

NOTE:

The Kuryakyn slip-on cover DOES NOT go OVER the OME rubber cover

I do not use super glue. I highly reccomend using black RTV adhesvie...

You can always "remove" the foot peg cover if you want to, with out damaging the peg cover or the bike in any way.

I use it all the time on most things (like your grips), and it only costs a buck at the dollar store..

It can be used to install mood lights also. I find th edouble back tape has become soft due ot the excessive heat (104 degrees down here) and a couple of my mood lights came loose. SO I used the RTV adhesvie, and it seems to be working just fine. The RTV adhesive can also be removed with WD-40, leaving no marks......or damage to painted surfaces as super glue would..

The instructions inside the packaging say that the Kury will fit over "some stock shifters." And goes on to say if it doesn't push over, then you must remove the OEM rubber, apply some black electrical tape to the shifter to build it up a bit, then slide on the Kury cover. Trust me, on the RSV, the Kury will not fit over the shifter peg with the OEM rubber still on.

I have those shifter peg covers on my bike, you can remove the stock rubber like Bob and Eck said. That is how I got mine off. The put on a few wraps of electrical tape and I used a little silicone adhesive to hold them in place. There is a small allen head on the new cover that you need to position out of the way and snug down also. Hope this helps

Thanks to all for the input & suggestions. I was able to get the OEM rubber off the shifter pegs using a small screwdriver to pry/stretch while rotating and pulling. I need to pick up some RTV (to add to the numerous tubes around my garage that I can never seem to find after the first time I use them:confused24:). Tomorrow, I'll wrap some electrical tape to build up the shift peg and seal everything up with some RTV sealant and snug up the set screw. Thanks, again.
