Maritimer Posted August 14, 2007 #1 Posted August 14, 2007 When ever I connect my GPS to my Aux, I can hear it clearly if it is only on its battery power. However, if I connect the GPS to the Cig Lighter via its power cable, RPM noises over come the sound of the GPS. Even through my headset I can not hear it properly if powered other then its own battery power. Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks
RPG Posted August 14, 2007 #2 Posted August 14, 2007 Thats a bit strange alright. I would begin by checking my battery connections to ensure that they are clean and tight. It sounds like you may have a poor ground connection between your acc. plug and your battery.
gibvel Posted August 14, 2007 #3 Posted August 14, 2007 By RPM noises do you mean static from the plugs firing or just general engine noise?
Stoutman Posted August 14, 2007 #4 Posted August 14, 2007 This is a common problem with automotive audio. There are filters that you can install in the power to your AUX plug that will reduce this noise. My favorite one looks like a small coil of wire wrapped around an iron core and is sold by AC Delco authorized repair facilities. Also, the ground suggestion above is good advice. I would check that first. The reason you are not getting the noise when you run the GPS on its battery is that the noise is entering the system via the AUX power plug. Making sure you have a good ground could reduce this noise. If not go to your local car stereo shop and describe the problem and ask them to recommend a choke or filter.
Maritimer Posted August 15, 2007 Author #5 Posted August 15, 2007 thanks I will check the ground first and see what gives. Cheers
KiteSquid Posted August 15, 2007 #6 Posted August 15, 2007 I is most likely a ground loop. This happens when all the devices are not grounded at the same point on the vehecle. Here is a good discription of how it works, and how to fix the problem, however I have not found an isolator on the market with 1/8" plugs on both ends of the unit..... you might be able to cobble someting up and put it in the fairing.... http://www.bcae1.com/glisoltr.htm Or you could buy this it Radio Shack and modify it for 1/8" jack & plug. http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pRS1C-2160121w345.jpg Clickable image.... I just did another internet search and found one at WingStuff.com but it costs more, however it is turnkey http://www.wingstuff.com/images//store1/pgroups/4048_image1.gif clickable image..... $29.95..... Another thought, you might move the ground for the outlet and the stereo to the same point on the bike........
HGWT Posted August 16, 2007 #7 Posted August 16, 2007 I am not saying that this is your problem but, when I hooked mine up I got no audio. I was pissed. Smoked 2 cigarettes and drank 1 beer, then I went over and turned up the volume on the gps itself and all was well after that,

I found 1 at Rat Shack but with the universal connections. Cost me $31 Can but did the job. The sound is unbelievable. Clear as a bell. Thanks all for the replies.
Dusty Posted August 20, 2007 #9 Posted August 20, 2007 I have the exact same issue, to the point that I stopped using the audio on my GPS. From the responses above, I got the answer that I needed. Thanks!
Maritimer Posted August 24, 2007 Author #11 Posted August 24, 2007 So it was a ground loop. Yep so it seems. At least, this ground loop isolator fixed the problem.
