66impala Posted May 6, 2009 #51 Posted May 6, 2009 Im new here and still have to wait two more weeks to take delivery of a 1990 venture that I found on the internet. I started riding 5yrs ago when I was 37, Went and bought a new 883 sportster, walked into the dealer with my OCC shirt on and asked which bike is the same price as a Dinette Set! The first few months to a year are a phase, its all about image, chrome this and shirts that. Luckily I take safety serious, safety gear, brc and the erc courses, also read Proficient Motorcycling many times. Hog: the first year was free with the purchase of the bike, the magazines were ok to read, the other pins and stickers they could keep. The Local chapter monthly meetings were nice and the people there seemed ok. But, owning a 883 sportster is like being the retarted son, you are a outcast from all other harley riders including 1200 sportster owners. I was told at the one meeting that I shouldnt come on "xyz" ride because I only have a 883. So 5yrs have gone past, 32k on the odometer, been to 10 states and Canada, Ive included one of my two sons on most of my trips (no trailers envolved). Most of the weekend riders only know how to run to the dealer and order junk from a catalog. Ill wave or talk to anyone about motorcycling. Being a gear head I can talk about something relative to most bikes. I cant believe I waited so long to start riding.
