FL-Venture-Rider Posted April 13, 2009 #1 Posted April 13, 2009 (edited) I just spent over a hour reading post back to 2005 on tires. My stock tires have 9,700 miles on them, and maybe have another 2K to go. I received a few emails for on-line stores, with 30% off tires, so I started looking into possibly ordering some now then later. I read how popular the Avon Venom's are for the RSV, and also the Dunlap E3's also seem to be well liked. In the past on my GW and other bikes, I always ran Metzler ME880's, but I seen some neg responses for that tire on the RSV. I also read some people are happy with the Commanders as well, but never heard of them. I was hoping to get 15K out of a set of tires, as well as a good highway , low speed handling tire. I do allot of riding 2-UP, so safety and handling are my to concerns My sizes are : Front : 150-80-16 Rear : 150-90-15 Are those the size's I should be ordering for either Avon's or E3's ? Or would you recommend another tire ? Any help is appreciated Edited April 13, 2009 by FL-Venture-Rider
Sleeperhawk Posted April 13, 2009 #2 Posted April 13, 2009 I have run both the Avons and E3, Really like both of them. If buying the E3, the rear is MV85B15 (same as 150-90-15) I am now buying mine from Motorcycle Super Store as they have free shipping and a 10% discount for our group. 95% of my riding is 2 up, and have gotten around 14000 on the rear Avon, currently have about 14,000 on the E3 and still looking good for that rear tire.

FL-Venture-Rider Posted April 13, 2009 Author #5 Posted April 13, 2009 Thanks, I just bought the bike last week, and rode 900 miles since then, 500 of which was with the wife, and havn't noticed any low speed issues. Thank you for the heads up
stroker ace Posted April 13, 2009 #6 Posted April 13, 2009 The Commanders are made by Michelin. I currently have Metzler's on mine and have had no problems though others on here seem to have had some. A friend of mine runs the Avon's and gets around 8,000 or so miles out of a rear. MY

Mariner Fan Posted April 13, 2009 #8 Posted April 13, 2009 Marco, From what I've read I've decided on either an Avon or the Dunlop E3. They seem to be similar in style and I don't think you could go wrong with either. I'm about due for a rear tire and will just look around to find the best deal in either one. Bob
FL-Venture-Rider Posted April 13, 2009 Author #9 Posted April 13, 2009 I agree Bob, thanks for your input, It's greatly appreciated as always I'm online looking now to see what the price differences are

Brake Pad Posted April 14, 2009 #15 Posted April 14, 2009 am I the only one with a 180 on the rear tire?
Sideoftheroad Posted April 14, 2009 #16 Posted April 14, 2009 Metzeler's came on my bike when I bought it recently. I didn't have any issues with them either. The front was worn so I replaced them both with E3's. The handling is like day and night, can't even describe the differences. I don't think you will be disappointed. The mechanice at the dealer test rode it after they were done and said he is going to start recommending them. Previously he was recommending Dunlop D404's (I think that is the model #). Bob, Guess I forgot for you to test drive my bike at the last meeting so you could feel the difference. If you come to the ride on Sunday (weather permitting) you are welcome to take it for a spin.

So your saying the E3's over the Metzelers right?
Sideoftheroad Posted April 14, 2009 #18 Posted April 14, 2009 Seems like the top 2 choices on this forum are either Avon Venoms or E3's. I would buy E3's over Metzelers. For Ventures, I would not buy Metzelers. Even though I did not experience it, from all the reports of chunk's falling off while riding, is enough to scare me away from getting another set. Everyone's experiences are different. Some have run Metzelers and no issues and some have not. I know people that have roadstars or roadliners (can't remember which right now) with Metzeler issues similar to what is being reported here. I am not sure how many miles were on the set I had on as I bought the bike used from a dealer. I know the previous owner, but from asking him other questions about the bike I know he won't remember when he got them. I had over 4k miles on the Metzelers since I owned the Venture and no issues except the front was worn. Just seems like the Metzelers' being a softer compound are more for lighter bikes IMO. I had them on my VTX1300 before I traded it and I had like 7k miles on that set. It still had the little nubs on it. I think those would have lasted a very long time.
FL-Venture-Rider Posted April 15, 2009 Author #19 Posted April 15, 2009 How about the hardness of the ride between the E3's and the Venoms ? I noticed the E3's rear are 77H on the rear @ 40 psi The Venoms are a 80H @ 50 psi I'm not used to running a rear tire at 50 psi, does it make it a harder ride, or give the bike more of a bounce ?
mountainhorsega Posted April 15, 2009 #20 Posted April 15, 2009 and am VERY happy with it. Rode home from the shop in the rain and never had a slip - in fact, it felt great. Can't speak to Avon's but I would recommend the E3. Had the Mich commanders on previously (still do on front) and would recommend them as well. They are good tires but I think this E3 is a little more confidence inspiring. So far, it feels great.
craigatcsi Posted April 16, 2009 #21 Posted April 16, 2009 Not meaning to highjack the thread, but there are no mentions of Whitewalls. I stopped at the dealer this last Saturday and the only Whitewalls he could find were the Dunlops. - I'm not sure I want Dunlops. I emailed Avon and they said they couldn't help me. What brand Whitewalls do any of you run? craigr
slick97spirit Posted April 16, 2009 #22 Posted April 16, 2009 I'm also in the process of ordering a front tire. The Avon I saw on Southwest's site has a speed rating of "H", is that o.k.? I'm not sure here. Also, which site has the best prices, Southwest or Motorcycle Superstore? Really struggling here on whether to order the Avon or the E3. I have a Metzler on the rear.
GeorgeS Posted April 16, 2009 #23 Posted April 16, 2009 One other brand of tire, thats seems to never be mentioned on this web site. Thats the Continental TK series. I have used one of these on my 89 rear. It performed just fine, and lasted about 13k, and when removed , it still might have gone another 2K. Also, I ran these tires on My BMW, R100T from 1983 till 1993. Ran about 50K on several of them, and had ZERO problems. I only bring this up, to stir up some more Controversy, concerning Tires Any comments ??

Scroll back a few threads, and you'll see motocycle super stores 10% discount for being a member here. I found they were the cheapest and free shipping. I havn't made up my mind yet either, as I still have about 2k left on the tires , but will need to order some soon here
