ManWithAVision Posted April 13, 2009 #1 Posted April 13, 2009 Had my 06 RSTD in to the local Yamaha dealer last week for the 1000 KM warranty service (bought the bike new last fall). They did a valve adjustment and a carb sync as specified in the owners manual. On the way home after picking the bike up I noticed I was getting an intermittent popping noise coming from the right side exhaust at idle. The bike ran fine otherwise at higher rpm's. This persisted for a couple of days then just after I called the dealer about the problem and was going to take the bike back to them it suddenly disappeared on it's own. Can anyone tell me if this would have been a valve timing issue or a carb sync issue? Since it has now stopped should I still be thinking about taking the bike back to the dealer?
eagleeye Posted April 13, 2009 #2 Posted April 13, 2009 I can't help you out with an answer, but if I were in your position, I'd still take it back to the mechanic that worked on it, and have him check all of the hoses and fittings, and what ever else he thinks. Better safe than sorry. Steve

Better safe than sorry. Steve Went by the dealer's shop today and spoke to a mechanic. The guys at the counter claimed it must have had something to do with bad fuel and that the carb sync or valve adjustment couldn't have caused it. When I spoke with the mechanic he said it could also be caused by weather changes and the temperature is still quite chilly, so that is the only thing that made any sense to me. Had the bike out again today and it is running fine now with no more popcorn in the exhaust note.
V7Goose Posted April 14, 2009 #4 Posted April 14, 2009 Popping at idle is very uncommon - I have not personally observed it, nor have I seen it discussed. That would be very different than the fairly common popping on deceleration that is often caused by both bad carb sync and intake vacuum leaks. Although I can't say for sure, I would think that a really bad carb sync could certainly contribute to the problem. More likely, if they left off one or both of the vacuum hoses that operate the AIS valves, or damaged one of the hoses taking them off for the sync, that really could cause the problem, but you would more likely be complaining about lots of loud popping on deceleration. Good luck getting it sorted out, Goose

Good luck getting it sorted out, Goose Thanks for the suggestions V7. Whatever it was, it seems to have corrected itself after a couple of rides. I did have what sounded like missing on one cylinder very briefly during my last ride of the fall in mid November and it is still pretty chilly here, so maybe the cold air has something to do with it as the mechanic suggested.
