Could somebody please give me some instruction on removing my starter on a 83, I want to clean it up before something unpleasant happens,I dont want to have on of my famous tantrums if it fails in public j.k. THANX!!!!!:guitarist 2:

Its tucked up behind the radiator. Remove the rad cover, bottom cowling (chin), remove bolts holding rad in place, there should be enough room to remove starter. :canada::canada::canada:

THANK YOU for the help, as for the rope, i happen to have one of those tied to my boat and I need to take it off, I tried but the rope just keeps getting bigger ware it is attached,Im real confused. Just kidding,I know the question sounded stupid but I have no info on it and I couldnt find any either :thumbsup2:

There are no Stupid Questions, I just had to pick on a first genner, all in fun!! Hope you got the help that you needed, good luck!!

Stud had a good start but there is a little more to it. I had to loosen the right hand header pipe a bit to get some wiggle room to pull the starter out along with removing the thermostat housing cover to have room to slide the stater back from it's mounting position.

 

I replaced the brushes on mine and added a second jumper wire to the plate for better contact. A good cleaning and lube along with the 4 ga. wires and all my starting power problems were gone.

 

Due to the location of the starter it's a PITA to do but it's worth the effort in the end result.

 

And hang onto that piece of rope. You can use it to tow the 2nd gens so they can keep up.
