I have managed to get my left rear fairing off without any problems but

can't get the right side to budge. Have read threads on taking off

front fairing and seat but not much on rear fairings. Do I need to

take off the seat to get at the 'hangers' for the rear fairings or do

they sometimes get rusted in a stubborn? Didn't want to break the

snap off trying to get it off...

Thanks

James

Yep, you're right, rear side covers. I just assumed they were a part of the

fairing. Since the are fragile, old fiberglass I thought I might benefit from

experienced suggestions rather than get out the big wrench to try to

get them off. Incredible, who big Yamaha shop manual tells you everything

except how to get into the bike to work on it! (this is on a first generation

1983 Venture)

pull the seat off and the battery/electrics cover (false gas tank). then put some penetrating oil onto the areas where the plastic "tangs" snap into the rubber "O" rings...let it sit for a while then gently pry each out. There's only 2 as I can recall...one at the top front and another down a bit. I've replaced the rubber "O" rings on mine with generic rubber grommets and mine are quite tight now and I had to file the tangs a bit to make them fit but they're still quite tight and require a good yank to remove them.

BTW, they're not fiberglass but rather, ABS plastic so there is some "give" to them and not as brittle as fiberglass (I don't believe).

That clears thing up a lot..Will try it in an hour or so...the seat bolts

are behind the passenger rails (one on each side) if I remember the

previous post. Can you purchase the air louvieres by themselves or

do you have to buy the whole piece that they fit into (in front of toe).

Appreciate help..

check ebay for the louvers...not sure if they're still available from Yamaha but I'm sure you could buy them separately. Someone on this site might even have extras.

The side covers have two "posts" on the front of the side cover, one at the top and the other about half way down. The rear has a clip (for loss of a better word) that snaps around a post with a rubber grommit on it. All of these release by pulling straight out. There are some tabs that fit up under the seat and false tank cover as well as a rubber strap that holds the side cover on, on the bottom of the side cover a little over half way from the front.:080402gudl_prv:

Speaking of rubber straps for the side covers, any one have 1 extra they might sell me? Only have one and I'd like one for the other side.
