SilvrT Posted April 8, 2009 #1 Posted April 8, 2009 We had another gorgeous warm day so I took the day off and went for a ride. Left @ 9:30 and didn't get home until 4:40. An awesome ride it was... uneventful ... EXCEPT on the last little stretch coming home... I'm on a 4-lane divided hwy ... there's a stop light at an intersection and I'm first out in the right lane. Ahead there's an "on ramp" coming from the intersection and lots of traffic merging so, the light changes, I get the jump and move over into the left lane (coz the traffic is merging). Guy to the right and a bit ahead of me merges into the right lane, immediately puts his signal on and moves into the left lane. I'm sure he didn't see me but I knew what he was doing so I let him in... right behind him is a woman and she does the same thing ... no signal... and she's even with me. I guess she figured that if the guy in front of her could do it, so could she. She never looked...didn't signal (at least that I could tell)...just pulled right over from the on-ramp across the right lane and into the left lane ... where I am. Forces me over to the shoulder (it's paved) and there's a large concrete barrier separating the opposing lanes. I'm blasting my horn at her... she can't hear me so all I could do was brake and let her in. Of course I moved over to the right lane and got up beside her and flipped her the bird along with numerous words of admiration for her driving skills. My next purchase of "safety chrome" will definately be a REALLY LOUD set of HORNS! (enjoy the pics)

BTW, you can fit at least 2 of Louisville's into Vancouver (where I live) according to 2006 populations

nonextant Posted April 8, 2009 #7 Posted April 8, 2009 When I was a younger, more inexperience rider, in Phoenix, I had a major problem with "bluehairs" merging into my lane constantly. The irresponible part? My roomate taught me how to brace my leg like a jousting lance and send the "offenders" sideview mirror skipping across their hood. Not something I'm really proud of, but I was never run off the road either.

I bought those at Walmart. can't recall how much but not a lot. They do nothing more than give extra "visibility" lighting to on coming drivers.
Smalltowntx Posted April 8, 2009 #9 Posted April 8, 2009 I recently purchased and had installed a set of Stebel 139db chrome horns. One of the better purchases I have ever made. They were about $60.00 with the wiring kit from my dealer Central Texas PowerSports in Georgetown, Tx. I am pretty sure you can purchase them cheaper online. I have a pit pass with my dealer so anything I purchase at their parts counter, they install for free. Works out real well for me.
jlh3rd Posted April 8, 2009 #10 Posted April 8, 2009 if all you have is the stock horn.....then you need to get the stebel, or equivalent.....it will mount where the stock horn is.....and will get the attention of anyone moving into your lane........it feels good to see the startled look on their faces as they jerk their car back into their lane.......one lady dropped her cell phone it scared her so much.....

Electromagnetic, and 136 decibles. unbelieveabily loud, in otherwords. they are pretty small to mount, take 12vs at 11 amps total and work instantly, no delay. again though, they are spill your coffee, brown note, loud

whozleft Posted April 8, 2009 #16 Posted April 8, 2009 They did a spot on tv last weekend on one of the hot rod truck shows about the companya that manufacturers air horns for trains. They have 1 bell up to 5 bell horns I think they said. Also very low air pressure needed to operate them. Wish I had wrote down the name for the place. Could you imagine one of those big honkers on your bike? Geez, that would get some attention, and maybe shake the dust off your bike too. LOL

On the RSV, several have mounted it in place of the stock horn that is right behind the engine on the right side of the bike. CarbonOne (I think) sells a bracket for mounting it there.
SilvrT Posted April 8, 2009 Author #19 Posted April 8, 2009 great info guys... now the 64 thousand dollar question of the day is.... which is better ... air or electric horns ?? seems to me any electric horn would have a simpler installation as it would require less room (having no air pump).

Yup, that's where it is, behind the engine, kinda between the driver and passenger floorboards on the right side. Thanks!!!
