SaltyDawg Posted March 30, 2009 #1 Posted March 30, 2009 This little beauty was found a couple weeks ago on Camp Lejeune when they were clearing some land. It is an Eastern Diamondback Rattle Snake. They are rare around these parts and extremely rare this size. Look at the size of it's head. It was relocated to a remote area of the base. Somewhere near Beer30's No that is not me in the picture, it's one of the base rangers. Needless to say people need to watch where they step when hiking and camping.
pegscraper Posted March 30, 2009 #2 Posted March 30, 2009 Wow, he is a big boy. I'd be afraid to handle him with poles that short. Can you find the rattler in this picture? He's circled in the second one.
SaltyDawg Posted March 30, 2009 Author #3 Posted March 30, 2009 It was hard to spot, but I did. Pretty good camo. Those poles are short, not to mention one looks like it is bending.
mini-muffin Posted March 30, 2009 #4 Posted March 30, 2009 That's one thing I'm not looking forward to when the warm weather comes in to stay. One of the native guys tried getting in the house last year. Scared Jeff when he tried to get in and he had company at the door already. Margaret
BIG TOM Posted March 30, 2009 #6 Posted March 30, 2009 Mmmmmm, dinner! Can get a couple of dinners out of that baby..and some nice backing for a self bow...taste like chicken..let the feast begin!!
V7Goose Posted March 30, 2009 #7 Posted March 30, 2009 Can get a couple of dinners out of that baby..and some nice backing for a self bow...taste like chicken..let the feast begin!! Man, you nuts! It don't taste like no danged chicken - it tastes like SNAKE! And that's better ANY day. Heck, if ya gotta compare it to somethin, compare it to gator, not some stupid bird.
krome rose Posted March 30, 2009 #8 Posted March 30, 2009 Lock up your small children! That one looks like just about anything is on his menu! Brandy
skydoc_17 Posted March 31, 2009 #9 Posted March 31, 2009 Like the Marines, I was always the "Point Man" at summer camp! When I lived in the semi-desert around San Diego, we would find them over 10 feet long regulary. I had an inground swimming pool in the back yard and we would get every kinda' creature on the ark in our back yard, just stoppin' by for a drink. That one is pretty darn big for the east coast. Oh Yea, they do taste pretty darn good! Earl
juggler Posted March 31, 2009 #10 Posted March 31, 2009 That is why I like Minnesota. The winters may be long but there are no snakes in the grass except the ones we elect, no giant spiders and no man eating bugs like you all have down south. BTW: The wind is howling and we're getting snow again. Up to 2 feet in the northern part of the state. Maybe only a few inches here in the Twin Cities.

Oh Yea, they do taste pretty darn good! Earl It wasn't unusual to find them that size in the Everglades when I was growing up, but in North Carolina they are usually 3-4 ft long. This one is close to 8 ft and that's about as big as they get. I am still amazed at it's head. Oh yeah, they do taste pretty good. I think they taste more like a Curlew (chuckaluskee chicken) than a real chicken.
ddoggma Posted March 31, 2009 #12 Posted March 31, 2009 Thats a big rattler, around my way its the cotton mouth we have to watch out for. The rattlers are more west and north of Philly
Skid Posted March 31, 2009 #13 Posted March 31, 2009 Shame to turn him loose, he would have made a nice looking pair of boots....
