If there is one thing that I hate, it's being stumped, and carburetors

I am in the process of getting Dave P's '86 back together and the #2 carb is being a PITA. I set all the other floats on the other 3 carbs with relatively little difficulty. #2 we the one that I couldn't get the pilot valve out of and Yammer Dan ended up sending me a set of carbs he had so I could swap the bodies out. I have had this carb broke down several times now and soaked it good with carb cleaner in all the ports and passeges that I know of and can see.

Here's the deal, no matter where I bend the tang to set the float level it never is right. It is always too high I can't get it to come down. I have looked at the seat and needle, even replace the needle with a different one from one of the spare carbs. It seem to me that gas is filling from possibly somewhere else. It's not flowing over but no matter what I do, it will not set right.

I have said it before, I suck with carbs, and it irritates the crap out of me that I need to take time to learn them and I hate that! I need some help from you carb guys out there, I'm at my wits end here and Dave needs his bike back....give me some guidance please

Do you mean the float height as measured with the carbs apart is too high or the fuel level is too high ?

The float can easily touch the casting, making it impossible to make the float height less. I think you mean the float level, though, so I don't know the answer.

I ran into this on my Suzuki, don't know if Venture uses this or not but anyway the needle seat on the Suzuki has an "O" ring where it presses into the carb body, these deteriorate over time and will allow gas to seep into the float chamber bypassing the needle valve. Another possibility is the float from that carb has lost some of its bouyancy, allowing more gas into chamber before exerting enough force to finally close off the needle valve. I hate carbs too, just had mine off the 83 Venture for cleaning.

Sounds like the same issue I was having on my '84 a couple of years ago. Two of the floats were soaking up gas and not sealing the needles. Too heavy to float at the right level. After I replaced the floats I never had that problem again.

Do you have access to a scale that can do grams or even better, mgrams? Best bet would be the weigh one that is sealing, or a new float and then the problem float. Might show up with a noticable difference.

Just a thought.

Yeah its a shame that Yamaha wont put FI on its top of the line bike, they put it on some of the smaller bikes and newer models, their crotch rockets have it...........I can't believe that it would be such a major deal to covert the RSV to FI..............Wake up Yamaha, your going to loose customers over this thing...........

I feel your pain Brad, I had a couple of bikes I rebuilt where I had the same problem and the fix was just to find another carb and replace it............Good Luck.

Sounds like the float is bad did you try a different one?

Thats exactly what it was, I installed a different float and it set perfectly. I installed the carbs on the bike last night and fired it up this morning after I charged the battery. I was very happy as it turned over about 3 times and fired right up. Thanks again for all your advice fellas, now I can get Dave's bike together so he can ride it

Well there ya go Squidley. Carbs are such a simple thing and they go and screw it up by putting parts in them like needles, floats, net filters, enrichment valves, cutoff valves, jets and all the other junk. If only someone made something that just shot in the gas as needed without all the crap. Oh yeah........that's called EFI!

Glad ya got her fixed up.
