CMIKE Posted March 29, 2009 #1 Posted March 29, 2009 I have a 07 RSMV with the 404's on it. From all I read here...I cannot wait to get those tires off the bike. Only got about 4K in them now. If fact I am thinking about going ahead and swapping both now. Elite 3's or the Venoms I am going back with stock sizes. Tonight I was doing some research on which tire should buy. I have used Dunlops religously for years on all my racing bikes and had really good luck from them (we don't care about longivity dirt just don't come apart and get good traction), but I feel there is not as much infor on the Elite 3's to just go with them. Avon's have a lots of information from this site and others that indicate good luck they are a good choice. I do not know anybody personally that is running nothing but the stock 404 or Brickstones. One concern that I could not find any information on... WIDTH?... Stock tire width according to manufactor... Dunlop 404 Front and rear 6.06" (white walls are a little bit wider 6.08 and 6.05 ???) 150/80-16 71H BW 32KY-91 3.50 25.43 6.02 6/32 761 @ 41 150/90-15 74H BW 32NI-50 4.00 25.60 6.02 9/32 827 @ 41 Dunlop Elite 3 front 5.97" rear 6.02 150/80-16 71H BW 4079-89 3.50 25.54 5.97 6/32 761 @ 41 MV85B15 77H BW 4079-45 3.50 25.50 6.02 11/32 910 @ 40 Avon Venom Front 6.20" Rear 6.30" 150/80-16 71H MT3.50 3.00 - 4.00 157 6.20 637 25.10 150/90B15 74V MT3.50 3.00 - 4.00 159 6.30 645 25.40 Now that is .28" wider than stock rear. about 9/32" (over 1/4") wider than stock. I know a little over 1/8" on each side. I know there is very little room now between the stock tire and drive shaft tube. Anybody had any problems with the tire rubbing to drive shaft tube? This has me really scatchin my head. It seems they be too wide and may rub or is it the way the measure the width of the two different manufacters tires? Anybody have this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. What gives?

I have used both Avon and E3, currently E3 (just to see the difference between Avon and E3, so far no difference and happy with both), and neither tires had indications of rubbing.
Sylvester Posted March 29, 2009 #3 Posted March 29, 2009 I run the Dunlop 404 and have for the last three sets. I am very pleased with the overall performance. I would never have Bridgestone or Metzler again.
Tom Posted March 29, 2009 #4 Posted March 29, 2009 Avon stock sizes here,no problems with rubbing 15000 miles on this set so far..conservative riding. Avon is all I will run, have not tried Elites.Had Dunlops but here in Texas they grind the road and leave tar snakes, the dunlops follow them BAD,the Avons go thru like they are not there.
Squidley Posted March 29, 2009 #5 Posted March 29, 2009 I think you might be looking too far into the data there. I have never heard of any stock size tires rubbing. I haven't run the E3's but use the Venoms all the time, just buy the stock size tire and ride
CMIKE Posted March 30, 2009 Author #6 Posted March 30, 2009 I run the Dunlop 404 and have for the last three sets. I am very pleased with the overall performance. I would never have Bridgestone or Metzler again. Would you like to purchase a set of OEM 404's with just about 4000 miles on them? I read here that folks get really good milage out of the first set anyway. My wifes cousin got 18K out a rear tire and 21K out of the front on a 05 RSMV. I did not believe him till I read it here also. I will take $175 (Negotiable) for the set... you pay shipping. I would be glad to get rid of them cause I think I'm about to remove them for replacement.
Leland Posted March 30, 2009 #7 Posted March 30, 2009 I only paid $206.00 (plus tax) for two new EIII last year.
Owen Posted March 31, 2009 #8 Posted March 31, 2009 My bike is lowered about an inch front and rear. I have no problem with the tires rubbing even two up and the bags packed. I run the stock sizes... Avon Venom 150/80-16 71H 150/90B15 74V
tazmocycle Posted March 31, 2009 #10 Posted March 31, 2009 i have ran a 180 vemonous on the back of my royal star standard and it rubbed a little bit till i add a few #s of air over recommended psi's. i ran 170's also on my 01 venture and they rubbed slightly, avon and metzler's. i haven't heard of any stock size avon's rubbing. on the v-max they put the outside washer on the inside to keep the wider tire from rubbing. some also cut the indented section of the driveshaft cover and reweld it a little closer in to do the same thing. i won't run any other tire but avons, best ride and handling of all to me!! but to each his own. good luck with your choice.
rjmalizia Posted March 31, 2009 #11 Posted March 31, 2009 Bought the Trigger with metzlers, they were ok until i installed that optional nail. Ended up having to throw the rear away, because i couldn't get it patched. So i ended up taking the 404 that the shop had on the shelf...i hated it. only got 5000 or so thousand miles out on it...very disapointing. I then went with the Venom...namely because it was the stock size (so i thought) with Wide-White-Walls. Turned out that even though the tire was stamped with the size that i wanted, it was actually a little wider. a healthy 1/4 or 1/2" wider (i don't remember which, sorry). Regardless, it doesn't rub...BUT it was a real pain getting back on the bike. They handle great and so far are wearing nicely...I must have a good 5K+ on them now. good luck.
