Batwing Fairing (phase 2)

Recommended Posts

Hello all and as promised, I have returned with more pics of the 'finished' product. I'm pretty darn happy with the way she turned out. The paint looks really good and the final mounts are working out well too. And most importantly...I'm still well under budget:

Fairing (ebay) $300+$45 shipping

Aluminum Angle-Iron $35 (had to buy 8ft)

Misc nuts and bolts $10

Paint $125 + two 12"Subs - decided to go with one color to keep things simple.

As before...so what do ya all think (and please be gentle)

Sorry about all the picture, thought more was better in this case...And, the "full size" links are generally 1.5meg images.

Thanks for looking

Ron

Be gentle he says!

I like the look.

What I would change or try to

Close off were the fairing meets the light...looks nakid to me..but that could be angle of pics.

And I would want the inside closed as well...but then again I am used to the closed look with the rsv.

All in all though...you did a great job.

Yeah...it's the pics. actually i have about a 1/4" on top and less than an 1/8" on the sides (almost too close for me)...AND, I left my little head light visor on too...that might be what you are seen.

I could move the fairing forward, but then i think i would look odd. i would however like to move in back, but then the lower wings would be touching the fairing...it's more or less where it has to be.

As for tunes...I've gone the rebel way, Ipod/Ijet with ear buds. that way when i don't have the music going, I get the benefit of semi-ear plugs.

As for the inner void...I was thinking stuffing a tool pouch of some sort in it or in front of the hole at the very least.

Thanks again for the positive feed back.

Nothing but love baby and summer is approaching...even though we had a small snow shower today!

Later:)

I ordered one from S&S customs cycles and it will be here Monday, cant wait to get it mounted on the VStar 1300, that will really change the looks.............

Can't wait to see it...

Who would have guessed. it's a SUNNY morning in the Pacific NW. Guess who's going for a ride, after the soccer game, the mower is serviced and the lawn is mowed, the jeep is washed and the jungle is wacked back a couple of feet...:buttkick:

Thanks all...

How did the bike handle at speed, did you experience any buffetting? I forgot to ask, what height is your windshield. I ordered the 7 inch windshield with mine and the lower deflectors.

Who ate the two 12" subs? were they Italian? Cold cut? Maybe meatball? Come on, tell us what happened to the subs?

Good Question...Actually I gave it to the guy that did the finish work on the paint and the one that did the painting too. The initial guess-tamations came in around $300 for the paint. This shop did it for $125 and it looked great. Now that it's been rubbed out, it looks even better...and for that, I bought them lunch. Seemed like the right thing to do.

"Paint the mounting hardware black": Excellent idea, i think i will.

As for gauges, radios and or a dashboard...i think i'll pass. I think i'm more of a purist in that regard. Less is better; keep it simple, etc.

Again, thanks to all for your thoughts and suggestions.

Ron

Sorry Dragon, forgot to reply.

Mine came with a 10" smoked glass which i haven't even bothered with...i used it as a template and made a cut down version which turned out to be just shy of 7" tall. I like the looks, but wind hit's me right in the eyes. So...i think the 10" glass would be perfect...i need to try it out.

as for buffeting...it does a little, but not that bad. I find that the wings tend to "flap"/vibrate from time to time, but again...not bad enough to take it off. Turbulence, no worse than the plain glass shield that the batwing is replacing.

All in all, i'm glad i spent the money on it...it's been a good project and i'm happy with the out come.

Dragon, Question: any idea on the thickness of your glass?

The one i made is a thicker 3/16" plexi. The taller stock glass that came with my fairing appears to be thinner...perhaps 1/8".

Taller and thinner...sounds like it will flap even more. I'll test it out and get back to you, assuming things ever dry out again.

  • 6 months later...

I did the same thing with my fairing from my last bike. Mine was real easy to mount after I finally figured it out. Heres the thread from the RSTD page.

I just have to get it painted to match the bike but I think I will wait till winter to have it done. These faiings sell for $699 w/o the radion and 799 with it. Its made by Wide Open Customs.

That was very nice of you! Sometimes things like this are real easy and some times they are a pain in the ***. Most of the time it is the second one; at least to get a real nice finish on. Simply based on the material...

It is always nice to get good feedback on one's work and I'm sure that made their day! (I know I always liked when someone commented on what they thought of the final paint job:thumbsup2:)

Looked at the cost of the fairing you bought. Guess it pretty much evens out. I bought an HD fairing when I had my VTX. Cost $125 on ebay (some have gotten them for less) and paint around $250-$300.
