Midrsv Posted March 26, 2009 #1 Posted March 26, 2009 My wife and I are planning a trip to Charleston and Savannah in May with another couple. I'm seeking advice on things to see and do and places stay and eat. Thanks, Dennis
mini-muffin Posted March 26, 2009 #2 Posted March 26, 2009 Sounds like a great trip. Here's the link for the tourism stuff in Savannah. You'll like it there, just if you ride your bikes don't go down to River St. That road is terrible on bikes, not so good on cars either. Here's the link to the visitors center http://www.savannahvisit.com/index.asp As for Charleston I understand they aren't very biker friendly. Can't park a bike in any of the public garages and such. I'm sure someone else will chime in on that. Plenty to see in Charleston as well. Two great choices for seeing plenty of historic stuff. Hope you guys have a good time. Margaret
Sling Posted March 26, 2009 #3 Posted March 26, 2009 When in Savannah, ride out towards Tybee Island About halfway to Tybee on the left hand side is a Historic site Called Fort Polaski great place to stop in and see great place to walk around. http://roadsidegeorgia.com/site/fort_pulaski.html Pretty good restaurant while out be Tybee http://www.thecrabshack.com/ Hope this helps:thumbsup2:
Midrsv Posted March 26, 2009 Author #4 Posted March 26, 2009 Thanks for the feedback. I wondered how biker friendly Charleston would be. If you can't park in a public garage where do you park? Dennis
mini-muffin Posted March 26, 2009 #5 Posted March 26, 2009 From what I understand you have to park on the street with the meters. They really don't seem to encourage folks coming on their bikes. Margaret
GunnyButch Posted March 26, 2009 #6 Posted March 26, 2009 Paula Deen's in Savannah http://www.ladyandsons.com/ River Street has large cobblestones and trolley tracks, park on Bay St and walk down Fort Pulaski Tybee Island Lighthouse and pier
Pecker Posted March 27, 2009 #7 Posted March 27, 2009 :bang head:I will chime in about Charleston. Love the city, hate the politicians. First, a few years ago. they run the bike rally out of town. The board of aldermen came right out and said they didn't want the city to be associated with biker community. Then two years ago a new city ordinance was voted in that banned motorcycles from all public parking lots and garages. This caught me personally, as i was visiting the city with a few freinds and was told to park on the street at the meters.ended up with an $8 parking ticket because my meter had expired. My feeling on Charleston, if they don't want my bike, then obviously they don't want my money. So be it. Sorry to sound negative, but I don't want you or any other rider go to Charleston and get caught off gaurd the way I did. I'm not saying don't go, more like be prepared. I do hope you have an enjoyable time. After all, thats why we ride, to enjoy ourselves.
raceman62race Posted March 27, 2009 #8 Posted March 27, 2009 Just got back from Savannah about a month ago. I would suggest eating at the Pirates House. It's the oldest known standing building in GA. They have a person dressed up like a pirate that gives tours of the building. I would suggest taking the tour and listening to the history.
