carb rebuild kit

Well since I'm new hear. My name is Jeff , I live about 20 miles south of Wichita KS on 81. I own an 83 XVZ12TK, an 81 Honda CB900F Super Sport and an 80 Suzuki GS1000L/G, so as you can tell I like the older bikes. I rescued the Venture this past winter from a non-mechanic for a measly $600, it has a little over 37k on it. He said the rear shock wouldn't hold air so he hung it from his garage rafter by a chain and attempted too take it apart he took the air box off and left the carbs exposed for 4 yrs and where he had it at had a leak in the roof and dripped onto the throttle at the grip and when I gave it a twist I heard and felt a snap snap so now I need cables as well . But what I need to know is, where I can find a carb rebuild kit/kits? I've always redone my motorcycle carbs in boiling water then blew them out with an air compresser, sprayed them out with starting fluid to remove access water, let them sit for a day or 2 then put them back together and to this date I haven't had any problem, but with these carbs being exposed for 4 years that might not work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. SSL

Unfortunately, I don't know of an actual rebuild kit. Individual parts are usually available from a Yamaha dealer. Maybe somebody else here has a source for a kit but I've never seen one. You can pick up complete sets of carbs sometimes on Ebay for a decent price. If they are that bad, that is something you may want to consider.

I'm with Don on this one, Pick up a set of MKI carbs. from EBAY. You Can find a set for $100.00 or less and just about bolt them on. I would check the Diaphragms before the install and change them out just to be sure. Thin walled cast aluminum and water don't mix and the cost of the individual Carb. parts from Yamaha plus the labor time just to find out that you have at least one bad Carb. would not be worth it in my opinion.:mo money:

I've thought of doing that. Then maybe I would have enough good parts between the 2 sets to make 1 good set. Thanks Freebird that's a good suggestion. Well, I did get a belch out of them back when I got the bike home, using a battery charger and starter fluid. If that didn't happen I was just going too tear her down and do the ebay thing.

Not sure from what you said, but did you dissassemble those carbs?

Most likley the Diaphrams, ( rubber ) are shot. thats the biggest expense.

Be sure to completly Drain, and clean out the Gas Tank !!!!! Remove the Petcock, and clean the Screens on it. Also, replace the fuel filter, located behind the fuel pump.

Open the Drains on each Carb bowl, and Key to ON, determine if the Pump is pumping fuel thru Each carb.

No carb " Kits as such " avialable. So getting a second set of carbs it is a very good idea.

Hey,

I am from Hutch and I work in Wichita, so if you ever need a hand, let me know. I am not far away.

Well about 4 years ago I was driving for Beaver Express making deliveries all over Hutch and South Hutch, so I know that area pretty well. Nice to know there is someone close!

Long handle bar like a jack handle or 2 x 2. . Pry up on braces between the carbs carefully. That worked pretty good. I bent 1 of the drain hole though, but me thinks me could straighten back out. Thanks for the help! Do the #'s on the butterflies mean anything?

You haven't said how you made out with your carburators. PM me if you are still looking for a replacement set. I have a set that came off an '83 that ran nice till it became a parts bike. I haven't opened them up yet so I can't tell you if they need a set of diaphragms. If they do, please see lead web thread on new supplier for diaphragms @$15 each.

good luck

Well I finally got most of my honey-do list done and I took a little time to get my vacuum pistons unstuck and check my diaphrams, everything went good, except the very last phillips screw on the last carburetor, I had to use a pair of vise grips to break it free. No holes in the diaphrams. My question is, is there anything I can do to keep them soft and in good shape so I won't have to worry about them for some time? Now I just have to worry about the smaller diaphrams and the floats. I think if I don't have any problems with them, it shouldn't be no problem to use these carbs after a good going through.
