Cinderella Posted March 21, 2009 #1 Posted March 21, 2009 Usually i can figure out how to fix a problem but this time im stuck. Ive got some kind of malware or something on my puter that redirects my browser. If i search for something and try to go to it my browser ends up going somewhere else.....sometimes when i click back it will then go to where it was sposed to, sometimes it wont.....this is getting extremely frustrating.... sometimes in the address bar i see "abcjump" when its doing this..other times i dont... I have done searches on how to fix or get rid of this and im not getting anywhere.......add to that it redirects me whne im searching also... I have adaware, spybot search and destroy and avg running on my puter.....i also tried to restore my system ( xp) to an earlier date and it wont do it......arrrrrrr anyone have any ideas or help to offer? I have been using IE because foxfire was giving me probs a while back and I deleted it.....I also have avant browser and it seems to be infected also...
utadventure Posted March 21, 2009 #2 Posted March 21, 2009 I've used a free product before called SmithFix. After a virus file update in regular mode, you run it in Safe Mode and it's solved this type thing for me before. Dave:fingers-crossed-emo
Freebird Posted March 21, 2009 #3 Posted March 21, 2009 Also, I just did a search and found several references that Combofix has resolved that problem. I've never used it but it sounds like it is worth a try. http://www.combofix.org/
Cinderella Posted March 21, 2009 Author #4 Posted March 21, 2009 ive read some about that combofix on geek forums about fixing this but it all seemed a little over my head and a lot of detailed doing this and that..so i hadnt attempted it.....lol I will check it out some more and try daves suggestion also.....
Yammer Dan Posted March 21, 2009 #5 Posted March 21, 2009 I don't know anything about computers but Cindy don't know where she is going?? No I will restrain myself!! I'm not got going to do it!! Hope you get it fixed Cindy!!
RossKean Posted March 21, 2009 #6 Posted March 21, 2009 Try Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ I found this one to be quite effective. I have had good luck with Spybot in the past but it took this one to ferret out a recent problem I had with a computer. Since I tend to practise "safe computing" I rarely run into issues but sometimes people other than me use my computer... I just Googled "abcjump" and it appears to be a bad one. You may find tips online to help if the standard tools don't work. Ross
Monty Posted March 21, 2009 #7 Posted March 21, 2009 I used to run a computer repair shop, and this always worked the best for me. www.superantispyware.com In extreme cases, you would have to use hijackthis to fix it, but you need computer knowledge to do so. Be very wary of some of the so-called "spyware" programs out there, as they are actually the problem. I Use AVG for my av, and Superantispyware, ad-aware and spybot s&d. My machine stays squeaky clean.
Cinderella Posted March 21, 2009 Author #8 Posted March 21, 2009 ok im back ..i think...... i am very careful here also...i practice safe surfing...... but my daughter who was just visiting and my dear hubby arent as careful......got to blame it on someone.... I tried to run that smithfix and it wouldnt run.......then i dowloaded the combofix and it wouldnt run......i rebooted in safe mode and then combofix ran......it redownloaded my restore program.......and then did a scan type thing and dleted some files, etc.....rebooted me in reg mode and when i did a test run in my borwser it didnt seem to be redirecting me anymore........ so as of right now i think it did fix the prob..... think ill add that superantispyware to puter also......the more the merrier. thanks guys..... Ill let ya know if it seems to come back I have used hijackthis in the past but dont have it on here at this time......it can be confusing if you dont know what you are looking at.....and sometimes im not so sure of myself either....lol
stardbog Posted March 21, 2009 #9 Posted March 21, 2009 Buy, a MAC puter, still no viruses, and crap you are dealig with. Good luck
jonesy Posted March 21, 2009 #10 Posted March 21, 2009 I do computers as a sideline and have been using a program from www.malwarebytes.org lately to correct various types of spyware with good results. Sometimes running the program in safe mode get the nasty ones before they can load.
Skid Posted March 21, 2009 #11 Posted March 21, 2009 I agree with jonesy and RossKean in using Malwarebytes. Also add AVG to your protection....
Cinderella Posted March 21, 2009 Author #12 Posted March 21, 2009 i have avg........... i just added malwarebytes ......... so now i have several programs on here...instead of 3:hurts: i would think i would be safe now....lol running a scan with malwarebytes now to see if it pulls up anything the others didnt.....(as of right now its showing 6 things the other apparently didnt get, still scanning)
jonesy Posted March 21, 2009 #13 Posted March 21, 2009 Like I said I do 10-15 computers a month, more or less, for last 5 years, I use spy-bot, malwarebytes, [free ones] and spysweeper w/anti-virus for 3 machines, [$40 a year, $25 at computer shows] can't remember last problem on my pcs. Put spy-bot on all fixed pcs, tell them about spysweeper, but keep malwarebytes to myself, don't want to put myself out of business.

TEW47 Posted March 21, 2009 #15 Posted March 21, 2009 How do you run the computer in "safe mode"? tew47
Cinderella Posted March 21, 2009 Author #16 Posted March 21, 2009 when u are starting ur computer up before windows starts hit the f8 key and it will give u the option to start in safe mode, etc. if you want to be able to get online while in safe mode make sure u choose safe mode with networking. dont be afraid to hit the f8 numerous times to make sure u time it right....lol
MrRadi8 Posted March 22, 2009 #18 Posted March 22, 2009 That's the biggest thing, safe mode. Some malware gets in and won't let Sypbot or AdAware get it out without running in safe mode. And some will prevent you from getting to run in safe mode. Just locks up. If you hit a problem again, update the files for the programs, then run them from safe mode. 99% of the time that will take care of a bugger that got in. I've been running Avast as my virus program for 5 years after giving up on Norton. Too many things were getting by it and were a royal pain to get off. Since then only had one instance of a hard to kill problem.
