Midnight Posted March 16, 2009 #1 Posted March 16, 2009 I removed the front wheel and brake rotors to send it out for a tire replacement. I didnt keep track of which side the chrome rotor covers came off of. I now discovered that one is weighted and the other isn't. Which side does the weighted one go on? I looked on South Seatle Yamahas part site and it appears to me it is the right hand side. Is this rught? What is the weight for anyways? As usual any and all help is greatly appreciated. Jim
pegscraper Posted March 16, 2009 #2 Posted March 16, 2009 (edited) The weighted one goes on the right side. The damper stops the rotor from ringing somehow. I took mine off once and got this loud resonating pitch every time I touched the front brakes. It did it every single time until I put the thing back on. Why only one side is needed and not the other is more than I understand. Edited March 16, 2009 by pegscraper misspelling
Sylvester Posted March 16, 2009 #3 Posted March 16, 2009 Pegscraper, I am glad you had an answer, since I will be doing the same thing soon. I could have looked it up in my shop manual, but your reply was easier.
Midnight Posted March 16, 2009 Author #4 Posted March 16, 2009 Thanks for the answer pegscraper. I will put it back on the right side. :happy34:Jim
ACE50 Posted April 9, 2012 #5 Posted April 9, 2012 I've seen a few RS (2nd gen) pics without the front ss rotors covers. How many people have removed them and kept them off?
eagleeye Posted April 9, 2012 #6 Posted April 9, 2012 I took mine off a couple of years ago and woudn't dream of putting them back on. I think that the rotors look lots better than that flat piece of chrome. And I don't hear any noise using the front brakes. There might be a pic of mine in my pics, haven't looked. Just my opinion.

Mine were off when I bought it. No noise or problems and I think it looks better without them. http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx250/C-M_Motorsports/Forum%20Use/029.jpg
Carbon_One Posted April 9, 2012 #8 Posted April 9, 2012 Mines been off for years too. I just like the looks better sans the covers and due to poor hearing I don't hear anything from them anyhow. LOL Larry

Rick Haywood Posted April 9, 2012 #11 Posted April 9, 2012 took mine off also and never noticed any noise when I apply the breaks
stroker ace Posted April 10, 2012 #12 Posted April 10, 2012 took mine off also and never noticed any noise when I apply the breaks Same here no noise, brakes seem to cool a little quicker when riding the curves and using a lot of brake also.
allwx Posted April 10, 2012 #14 Posted April 10, 2012 It does look good. But that weighted side... that is quite a lot of weight on that thing. I wonder what it is for.
