GunnyButch Posted March 13, 2009 #1 Posted March 13, 2009 Looking for some opinions on using a c/t on the front of my trike. The contact patch on the front tire now is about 1 3/4 inches either side of center or about 3.5 inches overall. One thing I was wondering about would be the effects on the c/t sidewalls being on the front.
BigBoyinMS Posted March 13, 2009 #2 Posted March 13, 2009 It would probably be a great idea. Since the trike doesn't lean the front tire scuffs when you turn. I used to hang out at BTW-Trikers forum a lot and saw a few that had C/T's on front. One in particular, a V8 trike, had a 255 or wider tire on front. The only problem with a Venture trike is finding a tire to fit.
SteveW Posted March 13, 2009 #4 Posted March 13, 2009 Wish I could find one to fit the front of my rig. having the hack on my bike means the same as the trike with no lean. I have seen a number of hacks with front c/t's I just can't find a size to fit it.

At this point I think I'll go with a rear tire mounted in reverse when I need to replace the front tire. Larry

Squidley Posted March 13, 2009 #7 Posted March 13, 2009 Fred Vogt here on the site has run a C/T on the front of his trikes for many years. Shoot him a PM and I know he'll have lots of good advise to give you, he's in Nevada.
GunnyButch Posted March 13, 2009 Author #8 Posted March 13, 2009 I knew somebody would know somebody with a solution. Like the others I was thinking about putting a rear tire up front at replacement time. Thanks
Carbon_One Posted March 14, 2009 #9 Posted March 14, 2009 Sent Fred an pm but I think his bike is a 1st gen so tires sizes are different. I think. Someone want to clarifiy that? Larry
Carbon_One Posted March 14, 2009 #10 Posted March 14, 2009 Fred responded earlier this evening and said he's using a 18" sidecar tire on front. Didn't say which one but don't matter as the 2nd gen uses a 16" tire. Larry
brscooter Posted March 14, 2009 #11 Posted March 14, 2009 My trike is a goldwing and on there site many people use a rear tire turned backwards. One guy said he got 25 thousand miles on it as opposed to 10 on a regular front tire. Lyle
GunnyButch Posted March 14, 2009 Author #12 Posted March 14, 2009 I PM'd Fred too and he uses an 18" sidecar tire. Looks like I'll switch to a rear tire when the time comes.
Cougar Posted April 23, 2009 #13 Posted April 23, 2009 Soooo? I was about to ask this same Question then I saw this Thread. So I want to change out my front tire. the consensus is that we or I run a new rear (RSV) tire on the front (backwards?) as I have done the same as Gunny.. Converted to a trike. would this be my best bet before I order a Tire. and why backwards? also why would the wider tire on the front be better? so many Questions! Thanks, Jeff
1rooster Posted April 24, 2009 #14 Posted April 24, 2009 (edited) At this point I think I'll go with a rear tire mounted in reverse when I need to replace the front tire. Larry I have had a rear tire on the front of my Venture for 31,000 miles and it was NOT mounted in the reverse rotation.Had to change it due to cupping from the sidecar.I ran the tire 2 years and 22,000 miles in the mountains of NC with no problems before installing the sidecar. http://inlinethumb12.webshots.com/42315/2489795320037297848S600x600Q85.jpg Edited April 24, 2009 by 1rooster

Thanks, Jeff The reason for reversing the rear tire when you put it on front is the direction of the tread grooves. Rear tires have the tread turned to optimize acceleration and the front for braking. Just look at a bike with cycle tires in their normal rotation. They are turned opposite of each other. And the reason for using a rear tire on front... rear tires are more reinforced... they have a higher load rating and a thicker tread. Edited April 24, 2009 by BigBoyinMS
eagleeye Posted April 24, 2009 #16 Posted April 24, 2009 If I had taken pictures of a HD, dunlop, 402 rear and front running in the correct direction, you would see that the tread design run opposite of each other. If you then take the rear, turn it around and put it next to the front running in the correct direction it would then be the same. I just put a HD, dunlop 402 MT/90-16 of the front of my 05 RSTD. --running in reverse-- Steve
Cougar Posted April 24, 2009 #17 Posted April 24, 2009 Thanks Guys.. now to figure out what rear tire I want on the front then. I had been Running Micheline's and the seem to wear pretty well. And I guess a soft tire is not necessary anymore. what are you guys running in the front that has been doing well for you? I guess this is the (what tire is the best?) I think what I am looking for is what is the most durable like 1rooster has so many Miles on his. Oh Oh--- what size am I looking for anyways? for the front. Just like I had before. or is there even a different size now when doing this change? Thanks Guys! Jeff
BigBoyinMS Posted April 24, 2009 #19 Posted April 24, 2009 I would just go with the normal front size(150/80-16)in whatever brand you like. Avon Venom is a good tire but others have their own preferences.
eagleeye Posted April 24, 2009 #20 Posted April 24, 2009 Couger, the HD is Harley Davidson. Dunlop makes the 402 exclusivly for HD. Steve
