waterbug Posted March 13, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 13, 2009 what kind of detectors are you guys out there using and how do you like them? Condor Posted March 13, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2009 what kind of detectors are you guys out there using and how do you like them? I have been thinking about the batt powered passport to put on the bike so I can stick it in my pocket and no crods to mess with. I haven't used it in a while, but I have a Cobra Trapshooter in the truck. It saved my bacon a couple of times when I took a trip around the US. Had it hard wired. Been thinking about mounting it on the scoot and using a 12vdc accessory plug. That way it can be removed, and I don't have to carry a bunch of batteries. BEER30 Posted March 13, 2009 Share #3 Posted March 13, 2009 I occasionally use my Cobra RD , use with cig-lighter power cord . Made a homemade mount off my left mirror using kydex plastic with velcro to secure . Easy to take off and toss into the saddle bags . I use the RD to prepare myself from the idiots slamming on their brakes when the man is out looking rather than for exceeding the speed limit . Hard to hear the audio , but easy to see the LED alert . Next RD I get will have the audio jack and I can plug into my Kennedy Cellset wiring to be able to hear through the IC . KiteSquid Posted March 13, 2009 Share #4 Posted March 13, 2009 Before buying a RADAR detector read the article at THIS link. It is an old article but 99% of the informaion is still good. I used to use a police band scanner for long range RADAR trap detection. I would just listen for ANY traffic on the Mobile Extender frequencies. It would tell me if there was a Highway Patrol Officer within about 3 miles. If there was, I would just slow down and get in the B lane. It saved my bacon about 30 times in the years I used it. Pop over the hill and the RADAR detector would be instanlty maxed out as the LEO was using instant on RADAR... Then a RADAR detector.... If the RADAR detector activated, it was usually to late... The scanner worked better. but with the new trunked systems, I don't know if the Mobile Extender frequencies have shifted or are still operable in all states. Are there any scanner operators here???? I have just learned to slow down.... I think. Only one speeding ticket in 15 years without using a RADAR detector or scanner.
CrazyHorse Posted March 14, 2009 Share #5 Posted March 14, 2009 You also have to contend with Lasers which are much more vehicle specific that dont take a shotgun approach like a radar does. Much harder to pick up. Think of a Laser like a sniper rifle and radar as a shotgun.

Many places are using these 800 megahertz frequencies I think the goverment is wanting the lower ones. You can do more with a 800 meg. The lower frequencies penetrate buildings better then 800 but have shorter range.
BuddyRich Posted March 14, 2009 Share #7 Posted March 14, 2009 I gots an Escort somewhere. Haven't used it in a couple of years. Seems the speed limit if fast enough for me now. If it ain't I just make sure theres always somebody around me goin faster.

5bikes Posted March 14, 2009 Share #9 Posted March 14, 2009 Your the slowest one around! Just drive a little slower than the traffic around you. My brother in law calls speeders his "insurance". Friend just a speeding ticket $345, Ouch!
KiteSquid Posted March 14, 2009 Share #10 Posted March 14, 2009 I don't mind paying a "velocity tax" but what I hate is insurance premium hikes due to tickets... So I try not to get tickets.
Guest Saddletramp Posted March 14, 2009 Share #11 Posted March 14, 2009 I used to drive commercially up until a few years ago. During that time radar detectors were outlawed in the trucks. I couldn't imagine what we would do without them. After getting over the initial shock I learned to keep my speed down and have found that you can go virtually anyplace in the nation and travel at 3-4 mph over the speed limit without a problem. Not only that but the increased fuel mileage and lack of worry over speeding were welcome side effects. Not to mention your insurance premiums stay much more reasonable without violations present. Won't go into detail about how this knowledge was gained.
waterbug Posted March 14, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted March 14, 2009 I want it more for the local highways than the interstates as I have a problem with the 45 mph to 55, I guess its a good thing I dont ride the ninjas or a new Vmax even though I would love to do light speed with that puppy!!!
