Guest wildcelt Posted August 2, 2007 #1 Posted August 2, 2007 Went to start my bike this morning, turned the key, hit the start button and nothing! Neutal light is on, and the headlight dimmed as I hit the start button. Does anybody have any ideas before I shell out $300 for a new starter motor? Thanks
Venturous Randy Posted August 2, 2007 #2 Posted August 2, 2007 Is your kill switch off? Run a big wire, like a battery cable from the positive on the battery to the post on the starter(make sure it is in neutral). This by-passes the solenoid. Let us know if this worked. RandyA
calperin Posted August 2, 2007 #3 Posted August 2, 2007 Do not spent anything like that. By sure if the relay bypass doesn't work, they will be the contacts on the rotor of the starter. There are some kits on e-bay for around 20$ that will help you to redo your starter. Any way, you will need to check the rotor on some places as Autozone, or any place that repairs starters for cars. It is easy. Of course, 280$ tip are accepted via Paypal....
Squeeze Posted August 2, 2007 #4 Posted August 2, 2007 Hi, i the Bypass works out, clean the Contacts in the Handlebar-Switch. There is an Opener for shut down the Headlight while pressing the Start-Button and a Closer-Contact to the Starter-Solenoid.
Gearhead Posted August 2, 2007 #5 Posted August 2, 2007 Great suggestions. Don't get too worried yet, it's very likely not the starter itself. Jeremy
cecdoo Posted August 2, 2007 #6 Posted August 2, 2007 This hot weather will kill a battery, I would try a fresh battery, if it ran fine before this problem:080402gudl_prv:
GeorgeS Posted August 3, 2007 #7 Posted August 3, 2007 Check water level in Battery: Charge the Battery: If still don't start, check the battery cable ends, clean and retorque. Especially check where the battery cable connects to the Starter Motor. You might have a bad Starter Solinoid. As a rule of thumb, the Starters themselves do not fail on these bikes. Check everything else first.
bongobobny Posted August 3, 2007 #8 Posted August 3, 2007 I agree with the battery thing! Sure sounds like your battery went south. I highly recommend spending the extra bucks and buy an Odessy battery!
