I upgraded my front turn signals to LEDs and now they flash faster than normal.. Knew it might happen..

 

Wondering if this http://www.customled.com/products/flasher_relay/flasher_relay.htm will work on the Venture, and still keep the auto cancel feature.. I've read somewhere non-load dependent replacement flasher won't work with auto cancel signals???

 

Or would I be better off just getting the 7.5 ohm load. http://www.customdynamics.com/loadequalizer.htm

This might not help, but I was looking at LED turn signals for a bobber I'm working on just yesterday, and it stated that I might need a new/different flasher unit if I went with the LED's.

I'll worry about it when I get there.

I changed all my turn signal to LEDs and you DO need load equalizers. The turn signals will then flash at the correct speed and the AUTO CANCEL still works.:thumbsup2:

Get yourself a No Load Metric Signal Stabilizer. Very easy to install (comes with installation instructions).

I dont know how big of a hurry you are in to finish this project but i have a brand new load EQ still in the package i bought it when i put my trailer hitch on... the hitch came with one so i didnt need it but to send it back it would have cost me like 15% restocking fee plus shipping.. im in florida untill the end of the month for a army shool so if you can wait that long for it ... i think i gave 20 bucks for it. .. something to think about Ron

I've though about picking this up: Smart Flash II

 

No load Self Canceling turn signal madule replacement....have all the benefits of LED lighting AND keep my self canceling signals.....just don't like the $90 price tag... hehehe

So why not just let 'em flash fast? I do. People notice. Isn't that the point?

 

 

That is the point, but I both bulbs and LEDs in the back and the fast flash does not let the bulbs light all the way up, they just get dim and go back off.

You will be much happier if you install a 'Metric Signal Stabilizer' from Custom Dynamics. Install is pretty easy and you will get the full potential of your LED's blinking at a normal rate.

OK, I looked it up,, a bit pricey (I could probably get a couple of 7.5 ohm 5 watt resistors from Radio Shack for $5, but not sure I'd be happy with the wiring I'd have to do to make that work) and I cannot tell by the description and installation instructions if this will take care of the whole bike, or if you need one for the front and one for the rear.. It has four wires, and the instructions say one is ground, one is keyed 12v, one is left rear signal wire, and one is right rear signal wire.. Seeing as it is my front signals that now have no load, I'm wondering if this would still be the correct way to wire it for me.

Yes, that is all you need...one (1) Signal Stabilizer to take care of the Front and Rear. I installed mine under the seat.

Pretty much the same speed as an incandescent setup when one's burned out. Most folks who comment tell me I have a bulb out. I'd suggest trying it first. It's easy enough to add something later.

Sounds like time for fronts. I got the Eclipse models and really like 'em.

OK, I ordered the Metric Signal Stabilizer, and so far I'm not happier.. I tried to install it today, per the instructions, it made a whining noise and the signals still flashed too fast.

 

So let me clarify my set up: First I added LEDs in addition to the stock bulbs to the back, signals still worked fine.. Second I replaced the front bulbs with LEDs and it started flashing fast.

I installed the stabilizer under the seat connected to the back signal wires, because that is what the instructions say and I was under the impression that one stabilizer was for all four signals and it shouldn't matter where you install it. Is that correct or because the low load is on the front only do I need to install it on the front signal wires?

I have installed full LED's on 3 bikes now. 07 RSMV, 05 RSMV and 08 Vstar Custom. The first was my 07...I used those Kuryakyn talked about above...had 2 of them. One for front and one for rear. They did not work at all. Turn signals flashed at 145 flash per minute with or without them. Emergency flashers flashed at the normal rate. DOT requires 60 to 120. Called Custom Dynamics and they recommened Metric Load Equalizer. This one does not require you to mount it on the frame for heat disspation. Those that require mounting on frame can over heat and fail if used for extented lenght of time. (like a parade or something) Worked like a champ cancelling worked also. Did the same thing to my son's Vstar Custom...again perfect. Next my wife's cousin. (week ago) All work perfect. IF you still have some incandescent bulbs...it should not matter...that load equlizer fools the system to think it has a load. You are just adding more load, so it really should not matter.

Make sure you got good connections and are connected right. Power - Left - Right and Ground. I did not use those twist on connectors...solder them and heat shrink them down. I am not sure about a whining noise...never had that happen.

MAny of us have used the Metric Load Equilizer from Custom dynamics and had really good sucess with them. Check your connections and make sure you have a good ground. You can probably experiment wth all kinds of stuff and finally get it to work. The loads we used were a sure thing for most of us.

Well, it is working now,, I installed it correctly the first time..

 

BUT,, I called CD and talked to someone there. They said the stabilizers work well but are picky about the correct voltage and asked if I tried testing it with the bike running. I hadn't so figured I would try that..

 

Bike wouldn't start, battery was too low. Now I had ridden the bike several days during Daytona bike week, which was after I installed all the rear lights, but before the fronts.

 

I had turned the key on and off several times when installing the front LEDs, and again when installing the stabilizer, but this is ridiculous, the system should not drain a battery that fast. Fortunately I have a spare battery which was on the bench with the tender on it. I swapped batteries and once the bike had a charged battery in it, running or not, the signals slowed down.

 

Has anyone installed a battery disconnect switch? I think that may be my next mod.
