Radio help: noise

Getting horrible noise through the radio in AM only. FM works fine.

When engine isn't running I can't tune in anything clearly, even local station in town is fuzzy but soon as motor's running it's pure noise.

Wondering as I start tearing into this problem if anyone has suggestions to check for first? can the noise filter be the problem or plugs?

 

Major issue for me as I listen to AM radio always.

You could try removing your seat and moving your antenea wire slightly and see if that makes a differance. I would also check the connections.

going to start from antenna and work all the way forward tomorrow night.

May be time for new spart plug wires and resistor caps...

The fact that it doesn't really work right even in ACC mode tells me it's probably not the ignition. Maybe a short-to-ground in the antenna wire? Just guessing here...

It just may be atmospheric conditions this time of year. Did it work OK within the last few weeks?? Does the radio in your cage work ok?

 

Check for corrosion on all the antenna contacts, especially where it plugs into the chasis in the fairing... But if FM is OK I'm thinking it's not an antenna problem.

I was looking at schematics and didn't see a noise filter unit on the 85's so that's out. The antenna is a bit loose on the mast.

Radio in car is fine. I picked up new plugs today when I got oil/filter/gear oil so will swap those out tomorrow.

 

Could be the amp as well. I have access to one that's known to work that I will swap out too next week if everything else fails.

the resistor plugs did help a little bit. The sparkplug wires are individual and not permanently attached to the coils correct? I am thinking of getting new wires and boots this week.

Yeah, wires are replacable. I've not done it but lots have. And the caps can be replaced with NGK units for 5 bucks each, but you can also remove the resistors from the existing ones and check for corrosion.

 

How does FM work? Cassette?

FM is just fine, that's why I'm pretty sure it's not the whip antenna. Cassette I have no clue as I don't own any cassettes anymore.

 

I've got all the plastic torn off for a quick paintjob this week so great time to get in there and get some new wires and caps on.
