N3FOL Posted March 9, 2009 #1 Posted March 9, 2009 I am happy to report that I am getting close to Log In almost 3000 miles this Winter season and my Venture will need another Oil Change. (wish I had more miles:cold:) This coming weekend, Oil Change, Oil Filter, Synch Carbs, and check idle will be done in my garage. Riding season for most folks is coming soon. Give your ride a brand new 'Oil Transfusion'. Ride safe.

After giving my Venture a nice bath and polish after picking up all the salt residue on the roads of SE Pa. and Md., I decided to let the rain come tomorrow to wash off the salt. Riding may commence once again on Wednesday or Thursday. On the way home, Valvoline 10W40 Moto Oil is in my 'To Buy' list.

N3FOL Posted March 10, 2009 Author #8 Posted March 10, 2009 As well all know, an Oil Change and Filter replacement is cheap insurance. The best part is that our Venture is very easy to replace the oil and filter (easier than my Vulcan). I also have replaced my Final Drive oil (last Oil change) and am thinking of replacing it again this weekend...What do you guys think about replacing the Final Drive lubricant after only 3K miles?
KiteSquid Posted March 10, 2009 #9 Posted March 10, 2009 There is so little Gear Lube in the rear-end of these bikes, I change it every time I change the engine oil. Cheep insurance. I also put a little molybodynyum disphulide grease in wiht the Gear Lube. Read THIS thread for more info on what I did. I buy the aluminum crush washers by the box to get the price down as you don't want to re-use them, or swap them out for Nylon.......if you want.

I bought a large bottle last year and with that, it may last for about 10 or more oil changes. As for the Molybdenum grease, what is the advantage of adding this to the Final Drive Oil?

In a nut shell, Molybdenum Disulphide will not move out from between two metal surfaces like gears, well after the oil has been pressed out and it has a very low coefficient of friction. Here is an excerpt from the article at Wikipedia HERE. MoS2 with particle sizes in the range of 1-100 µm is a common dry lubricant. Few alternatives exist that can confer the high lubricity and stability up to 350 °C in oxidizing environments. Sliding friction tests of MoS2 using a pin on disc tester at low loads (0.1-2 N) give friction coefficient values of Molybdenum disulfide is often a component of blends and composites where low friction is sought. A variety of oils and greases are used, because they retain their lubricity even in cases of almost complete oil loss, thus finding a use in critical applications such as aircraft engines. When added to plastics, MoS2 forms a composite with improved strength as well as reduced friction. Polymers that have been filled with MoS2 include nylon (with the trade name Nylatron), Teflon, and Vespel. Self-lubricating composite coatings for high-temperature applications have been developed consisting of molybdenum disulfide and titanium nitride by chemical vapor deposition. Johnny I use a 2 bottle water manometer, most use the Carbtune and here are 3 more options. http://www.tecmate.com/fuel_ignition.php As far as easy... yes, not hard at all. Just takes a little time. And if you decide to do it, DO NOT go by the Yamaha manual. You'll be turning the wrong screws if you do. N3FOL Posted March 22, 2009 Author #15 Posted March 22, 2009 Yesterday, I spent most of the morning Changing Oil, Oil Filter and Gear Oil. Everything went smoothly. I also Synched my Carbs and adjusted my idle to 1000 rpm. Carbs did not look too much out of Synch except for the right rear which was a little off...I then tweaked the settings a little bit to make it almost perfect for all four Carbs. Next in line....Clutch Fluid and Brake Fluid replacement. Ride Safe.
