Storminyte Posted March 6, 2009 #1 Posted March 6, 2009 I have an '08 with about 6800 miles on it. My neutral light stays illuminated all the time...when in "neutral" it is at it's brightest, as I shift up it gets less bright but still keeps some illumination. As I shift down it gets brighter and hits it's max again when I actually put it in neutral. Has anyone else had this problem or can tell me what the problem is?? Thanks...
SaltyDawg Posted March 6, 2009 #2 Posted March 6, 2009 Since you still have a warranty I would have them look at it. I have a 99 and it has been doing the same thing since I got it 2 years ago. As long as I can tell Neutral it doesn't bother me. But if there is a fix out there I would be interested in knowing it too. Like I said, it doesn't bother me so I haven't really looked into it.
1BigDog Posted March 6, 2009 #3 Posted March 6, 2009 Take it in for warranty work. That module contains the whole dash assembly and it costs over $800.00. I wouldnt mess with it myself. Thats what you have that 5 year warranty for.
pegscraper Posted March 6, 2009 #5 Posted March 6, 2009 (edited) Or if you're like me, you may think that some things are easier to fix yourself and be done with it rather than figuring out how to get it into a dealer and have another ride back home, waiting who knows how long on a dealer to get it on his schedule, and then having to do it again to pick it up, possibly having to adjust your work schedule to get there when they're open. The neutral switch is behind the middle gearcase cover. It may need adjustment or replacement. Edited March 6, 2009 by pegscraper
GeorgeS Posted March 6, 2009 #6 Posted March 6, 2009 Most likley its the Switch. About a $20.00 Item, and dealer should replace it under warrenty. Should be at most an hours labor for the Dealer, to cash in under warrenty. I would at least take it in, and see what they say. I have changed that switch, and its not a nice job.
N3FOL Posted March 6, 2009 #7 Posted March 6, 2009 I personally like having a neutral light that function as it was designed for. I don't want to find out that I am not actually in Neutral, when I release the clutch in my garage:Sad_0241:. +1 on taking it back to a Yamaha dealer for a Warranty work. Good Luck.
OutKast Posted March 7, 2009 #8 Posted March 7, 2009 My biggest wonder is why they put an indicator on the OD? If I am in OD and try to upshift, no harm done. But if I try to take off and not in first, may stall the bike and drop it, or even maybe pull out in front of a truck then stall or no power and get squished. So, how do I make my OD indicator a first gear indicator?
pegscraper Posted March 7, 2009 #9 Posted March 7, 2009 Now there's an interesting question. About the only thing to do is take the thing apart to get to the switch and see if there's any way you can modify the shift linkage pieces to do that. Maybe there's an indicator pin that can be moved or something. I don't know.
davecb Posted March 7, 2009 #10 Posted March 7, 2009 Just take it to the dealer and Makem Fixit...And don't letum keep your bike for several days...If you have to, jump up and down on the service managers desk and Yell...I WANTIT YESTERDAY!!!!!!!!!
N3FOL Posted March 8, 2009 #11 Posted March 8, 2009 I agree. Get it done soon, because dealers are starting to get busy with the start of the riding season. Warranty shall cover your problem. It was so nice today that I spent most of my day washing off salt from my cars and polished the bike. Rode for about an hour running errands today...
LilBeaver Posted October 28, 2009 #12 Posted October 28, 2009 Did this ever get resolved? Was it the neutral indicator switch or the dash? Did the dealer fix it or did you do it your self? My neutral light is intermittent (on very rare occasion - usually after many hours of riding does it not come on) and wonder what there is to pulling the switch and cleaning it?
N3FOL Posted October 28, 2009 #13 Posted October 28, 2009 I'm very interested to find out exactly this swtich is located to do some preventative maintenance to it. A pic can be very helpful. I hope Storminyte took advantage of the factory warranty on his bike. So, what was the fix?
dingy Posted October 28, 2009 #14 Posted October 28, 2009 I just looked at parts file for RSV and the switch & location look very similar to pictures in thread below relating to an 83 There is a PDF file at bottom of thread that has pictures in it.
