CMIKE Posted March 6, 2009 #1 Posted March 6, 2009 OK...Finally got a chance to get a short video of the new LED tail light and other LEDs installed from Custom Dynamics. Also added a strobe unit to strobe all LEDs on the back end. Movie is not that good but I think you will get the effect. That LED tail light is so bright when you watch it strobe...you look away and see red spots [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QooBZjPbB78&feature=channel_page]YouTube - Venture Strobe[/ame]
FL-Venture-Rider Posted April 4, 2009 #2 Posted April 4, 2009 Great job ! Can you post some links to what you bought, I'd like to buy this set up, I love it
CMIKE Posted April 4, 2009 Author #4 Posted April 4, 2009 Strobe - http://www.customdynamics.com/led_strobe.htm LED tail light - http://www.customdynamics.com/Yamaha_tail_retro.htm Turn signals - http://www.customdynamics.com/yamaha_turn_signal_retro.htm Just about everytime you see a post that shows LED turn signals or brakes in action...somebody jumps in with "Against the LAW" In some states it may be against the law...in my state it is not. I studied it before installing. I think anyone can interpet it a certian way and decide it is against the law. LED lights are becoming more and more prevelant and most are DOT approved now. The stobe unit is programable...you can flip a switch and make it like a back off module...blink 3 times then steady if you want. You can change it in a second no problem. I will take the ticket rather than get run over. Most states that have laws like this do not enforce them since the cop knows you are trying to be as safe as you can. If a cop stops you for this...he is just looking for something anyway. You all know it is all about being seen on a bike. A freind of mine got hit from the rear while sitting at a red light. The light changed green and the dumb ass behind him just drove over him. This is not supposed to fix stupid but I think it will wake them up.

FL-Venture-Rider Posted April 4, 2009 #6 Posted April 4, 2009 Thats ok, I apprecaite the advise Ken, but I'm not to concerned about it, as I just want to add lights to the back of the bike, to light the back up Thank you for the links, I've ordered alot of stuff from Custoum Dynamics, and they run a first class operation
Bummer Posted April 4, 2009 #7 Posted April 4, 2009 Careful, illegal in Ohio if used on the street. FYIKen, I'm wondering which part is illegal in Ohio. I've done similar stuff to my bike. I'm not going to change anything, mind you, but I like to know what laws I'm breaking. Old habit.
ken Posted April 4, 2009 #8 Posted April 4, 2009 Ken, I'm wondering which part is illegal in Ohio. I've done similar stuff to my bike. I'm not going to change anything, mind you, but I like to know what laws I'm breaking. Old habit. Here ya go 337.16 NUMBER OF LIGHTS PERMITTED; RED AND FLASHING LIGHTS. (a) Whenever a motor vehicle equipped with headlights is also equipped with any auxiliary lights or spotlight or any other light on the front thereof projecting a beam of an intensity greater than 300 candlepower, not more than a total of five of any such lights on the front of a vehicle shall be lighted at any one time when the vehicle is upon a highway. (b) Any lighted light or illuminating device upon a motor vehicle, other than headlights, spotlights, signal lights, or auxiliary driving lights, that projects a beam of light of an intensity greater than 300 candlepower shall be so directed that no part of the beam will strike the level of the roadway on which the vehicle stands at a distance of more than 75 feet from the vehicle. © (1) Flashing lights are prohibited on motor vehicles, except as a means for indicating a right or a left turn, or in the presence of vehicular traffic hazard requiring unusual care in approaching, or overtaking or passing. Guest tx2sturgis Posted April 4, 2009 #9 Posted April 4, 2009 Just about everytime you see a post that shows LED turn signals or brakes in action...somebody jumps in with "Against the LAW" Funny. We are ALL adults, and yes some of us STILL wanna be a mommy. We all know what the laws are! If a rider is capable of somehow reaching adulthood, working a job, providing food and shelter for himself at least, buying and surviving on a bike, having a computer, the internet, and all of this without dying or going to jail...I think hes capable of figuring out lighting laws and whether he wants to skirt by with something thats a bit outside the normal. Not DOT approved? Who gives a rats ass...I dont wanna get run over! Most of us have modified pipes...go too fast sometimes, and might even drink a beer before we take off on the scoot...with NO helmet! Were all big boys and girls. I'm with you CMIK...I dont need a mommy on here.

Owen Posted April 4, 2009 #12 Posted April 4, 2009 Also added a strobe unit to strobe all LEDs on the back end. I am interested in the strobe unit.... what is it and where did you get it? Thanks...

YamaDuck Posted April 4, 2009 #14 Posted April 4, 2009 Hey I'll pay the ticket if it saves my life. The RSV has terrible rear lighting and anything you can do to let people know you are stopping is a big plus in my book. I have extra lights, flashing lights, strobe lights, light bars and even lights that don't light up until you hit the brakes. I look like a Christmas tree when I hit the brakes and I am still watching my rear view mirrors when I stop. I can't worry about what is legal and not legal in each state. As long as I'm safe or safer then I'll pay the ticket. And what about the cars that come from the factory with flashing 3rd brake lights? Anyway that's my

Do you think you might could squeeze by on this statement? Do you think maybe you could say the motorcycle is operating in unfavorable atmospheric conditions...sometimes the atmosphere we have to operate in is full of crazy cage drivers that act like they cannot see a Bike is trying to stop? I know it will get them off your tail when you touch the brake. I am trying to help where can... I am not impliing anyone should break the law.

There have been PLENTY of times when a member here wasn't aware of one law or another and they often appreciate the heads up. Sorry, I think you are being unreasonable and out of line. Just my opinion.

dave_wells Posted April 11, 2009 #20 Posted April 11, 2009 (edited) Well After reading a couple of posts I converted my Blinkers to an LED cluster below is the set I have http://www.customdynamics.com/motorcycle_dynamic_clusters.htm Fast Shipping ordered Wednesday Received Friday Morning I installed the signal stabilizer the Blinkers would not work with out it Now every thing works My Blinkers are now a run\brake\flash What a Difference My question ---- the blinker is Blinking faster than it was and I can here the the Flasher Click-click -- Click-click Is this normal or did I miss Something Thanks For Any Help Dave W file:///E:/DCIM/100KC653/Dynamic%20Clusters.JPG Edited April 11, 2009 by dave_wells forgot somthing
FL-Venture-Rider Posted April 12, 2009 #21 Posted April 12, 2009 Dave, Usually when you mix LED's and regular bulbs, you have to change either the flasher, such as these, to trick the flash rate, which is what I installed on my VTX, when I mixed matched and the flasher worked great, everything flashed together. I'm not sure if they make them for the Ventures , you'll have to call them , or check their site: http://www.customdynamics.com/trick_flasher.htm

With the turn signals did you have to purchase the load equalizers? and also what are the two lights under the bags? are they turns and stops? and where did you find those? i am assuming custom dynamics, but what model are they? Thank you. Can you PM me the answer.
LilBeaver Posted April 27, 2009 #23 Posted April 27, 2009 Dave: Like another poster had said, if you didn't change the 'blinker' relay/unit itself then you will have that problem. The reason for your blinker blinking faster has to do with the same reason that on a car when you burn a bulb out, the other one blinks faster. The 'blinker' unit that you plug into the blinker's circuit typically contains a bi-metallic strip that has two metals with different expansion coefficients. What this means is that as you pass current through the bi-metallic strip, it heats up, at which point one of the metals expands at a different rate as the other causing the bi-metallic strip to flex/bend therbye opening (disconnecting) the circuit (causing lights to be off). While the circuit is open, there is no current running through the strip, allowing the strip to cool - where eventually it will straigthen back out and close the circuit once again allowing current to flow. These blinker units are optimised for the number of lights and the power draw of the system to blink at a particualr rate. By replacing the regular incondecent lamps with the LEDs what you have done is reduced the resistance of part of the circuit (sicne LEDs draw much less current than an incondescent) causing more power to be dissapated though the bi-metallic strip, therebye causing it to heat up faster thusly opening the circuit faster, and the end result is a much increased blink rate. So to answer your question of "is this normal" - I suppose the answer is yes. If you wish to have the unit blink slower, all you need to do (as someone else has mentioned) is replace the blinker unit with something that is rated for fewer bulbs or has a lower power rating. There you go, probably more than you ever cared to know about a blinker... - Rick M. ... My question ---- the blinker is Blinking faster than it was and I can here the the Flasher Click-click -- Click-click Is this normal or did I miss Something ... file:///E:/DCIM/100KC653/Dynamic%20Clusters.JPG
CMIKE Posted April 27, 2009 Author #24 Posted April 27, 2009 2 questions.. With the turn signals did you have to purchase the load equalizers? and also what are the two lights under the bags? are they turns and stops? and where did you find those? i am assuming custom dynamics, but what model are they? Thank you. Can you PM me the answer. I installed the Custom dynamics turn signals for front and rear...I did not like the dynamic clusters since I had installed them on a Harley of a freind of mine...they did not seem as bright as the straight single color LED's there is not as many of them doing the job. Plus the wiring is a little more of a pain in the you know what... http://www.customdynamics.com/yamaha_turn_signal_retro.htm Make sure you know what kind of bulb you have in the turn signals... Mine has the BAZ 3 pins and the 7507. There is a place on that website to help you determine what you have. I did install the load equalizers cause the turn signals were blinking very very fast...140 per minute. DOT I think says 60 to 120 per minute. Some folks think the 140 per minute is OK...I wanted to get it a close to stock as possible and wanted the cancelling feature to work. 4 way flashers worked fine without the loads. I install the "Metric Signal Stabilizer" from custom dynamics. http://www.customdynamics.com/loadequalizer.htm Scroll down you will see it. You could probably just change out the flasher to an electronic one...but I had to much money in all this to order something that I was not sure it was gonna work and have to wait a week on the rest of it to get the bike finished. I also did the LED turn signals on my son's VStar custom and wife's cousin's 05 RSMV works everytime just make sure you have good connections to the right wires. I soldered mine used heat shrink on all my connections. Under the bags... The first accessory I bought was one of the Knight Rider license plate frames. It has a sequencing LED (back and fourth left and right) that flashes on high intensity for about 5 seconds when you get on the brakes. (all the functions are built in to the LED unit) I really liked that to wake up the cages on your tail. Then I started looking at mounting something under the bags. I found just the knight rider LED without the license plate frame on the custom dynamics website. I bought 2 of sequencing LED with flashing brake alerts and they come with 3M tap for mounting. Mounted them on the bars under the bags that hold the bags with a fabricated mounting bracket to accept the 3m tape mount. (used a small peice of aluminum angle with a flat bar and a clamp to mount it). It took some time to get them at the same hieght and where they looked right to me...level and back under the bags some... I wanted to be able to remove the bags without messing with the wiring. But there was a problem...they did not sequence and do the brake flashing alert at the same time. They looked like a wig wag unit...blinking and flashing like a fire truck. You could not tell if I was stopping or turning or which way I was turning. This was not working as planned. You would think all the electronics would be the same...they should all work the same...not so. #$$%$$@#$@%@$!%$*&*#@#$@# I cussed for a few days about this. Then I orderd the same LED cause (I liked the size and intensity) with just a dual density. They are just brake lights now. I did have to put a diode in series with them to make everything work right cause it was triggering the strobe unit due to the voltage passing through them. (about 8 volts).. you could make them into Turn signals if you wanted by using 2 diodes to keep the two circuits separated. I wanted to keep Ambers for the turn signals on the back. Here is the link to the Knight Rider stuff http://www.customdynamics.com/knight_rider_led_light_bar.htm#Knight_Riderz_LED_License_Plate_Frames Strobe unit is programmable...flash or strobe I am strobing the LED wing on the travel trunk the tail light and the lights under the bags...the only one you really notice is the tail light since it is the brightest LED taillight I could find. Genesis LED's again from Custom Dynamics. The strobe unit can be found here. http://www.customdynamics.com/led_strobe.htm I mounted the load equlizer under the trunk (one for front and rear) ran extra wires under the rear seat to make this happen and mounted the strobe unit under the seat. I did not mix LED's with incandescent (stock bulbs) so not exactly sure what kind of results you may encounter if you do this...probably not favorable but nothing that can't be worked out... I also replace the reflectors on the sides of the front and rear with LED's...they are turn signals. Look at my profile...photos "RSMV Modifications so far" LED's under the side of the travel trunk, saddle bags as well all the rest of the improvements I have added... Custom Dynamics has some good folks for tech support if you need them. All this stuff I did was pretty straight forward but I did call them on some advice about blinking the reflector conversions (bought them from JP cycles) with the exsiting load equalizer and using relays to do this. They know what they are doing when it comes to LED's. Let me know if you have any more questions.
FL-Venture-Rider Posted April 27, 2009 #25 Posted April 27, 2009 FYI, great post CMIK, when your talking about flash rates, they only effect the turn signals. I'm not sure if that was in your post, if it was sorry for mentioning it again. When you add Load equalizers, the only down fall to them is they add more of a load to the electrical system, rather then Custom Dynamics Flashers, which will not. Last year I went through this on two bikes, and felt the same way, I had hundreds of dollars into all kinds of LED's etc, and spent the extra money for the load equalizers. Now I just buy the electronic flashers, and they work the same, without adding an additional load to the system. I also just bought and hooked up there Knight Riderz LED strip, and I have to say, it works great. Do you have pics of your bags with the non sequential LED strips used for the sides of your bags? I would love to see how everything came out
