hairman Posted March 5, 2009 #1 Posted March 5, 2009 I went to pick my son up from school today on my 1999 rsv and the clutch was slipping when I would get the rpm's up high. It was slipping in about every gear. I parked it for about 15 minutes at the school. When I got back on it and started home it wouldn't slip for nothing. I tried everything to get it to slip, but it ran fine. Anyone know what my problem might be? Thanks hairman

Your reserve is too full, or you haven't bled the brakes in a long time, and there's crystals plugging up the expansion hole at the base of the reserve.
hairman Posted March 6, 2009 Author #3 Posted March 6, 2009 I noticed that the reserve eye glass looks like it is completely full. Isn't it suppose to be half of the eye glass? I haven't put any in it and I bought it back in August. I hadn't noticed it slipping any until now. Thanks

If it doesn't have anywhere to go it will start putting pressure on the pressure plate and the clutch will start slipping. When it's cold the slip may not happen. The sight glass should show fluid about half way. Take some out and see what happens.
hairman Posted March 6, 2009 Author #5 Posted March 6, 2009 The fluid kind of looks dirty in the eye glass so I suppose that I need to drain this and put in new.
1BigDog Posted March 6, 2009 #6 Posted March 6, 2009 How many miles on that clutch? I would agree that you should first flush out the old fluid with new and see where that takes you. The color should look like a slight amber color. If it looks like Guinness Stout then it is too dirty. The possibility that your pressure plate is weakening is another thing to look at. Id flush it out first then take it for a good ride to see if it slips any more.
AmnChode Posted March 8, 2009 #7 Posted March 8, 2009 I know when my clutch was slipping, I replaced the spring with one from PCW Racing and it fixed it rather well. Of course, I also went in a replaced all the discs and changed out the half disc for a full....hooks up quite nicely now
