Bill W. Posted March 1, 2009 #1 Posted March 1, 2009 Are the modded battery cables still available?? The last PM I sent (back in Jan 09) went unread!!
MidlifeVenture Posted March 1, 2009 #2 Posted March 1, 2009 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18812 Is this what you want?
Bill W. Posted March 2, 2009 Author #3 Posted March 2, 2009 Yes!! Is anyone still making the cables, or do I have to do it myself??

Squidley Posted March 2, 2009 #5 Posted March 2, 2009 Unfortunately it seems Paul is pretty wrapped up and is having a hard time with getting some cables made. If you need some help with the cables like measurments shoot me a PM and I'll give you a hand, I used to be the one that made them here on the site.
lonestarmedic Posted March 2, 2009 #6 Posted March 2, 2009 I will be making a few sets as needed. Right now I am awaiting the flag style terminals for the battery end. I didn't like the thickness of the local stuff. Probably have them by the end of the week. Once in I am going to make a set and figure a time and materials price. Also want to put up a couple pictures. Don't know what most folks want/need for the accessory wires. I have picked up Posi-Lock splices as a good possibility. Some folks may just want bare wire and do their own soldering. I plan on offering the positive from the battery, the positive from the solenoid, and the ground. They will be constructed of 4 gauge battery/welding cable (should be fairly flexible) and plated copper ends. I hope to keep the price to the original $35.00 mark that TupperJ had. I will know when I see the shipping charges. Sorry if I missed a PM. My laptop went on a bit of a vacation a couple weeks ago. JB
RedRocket Posted March 2, 2009 #7 Posted March 2, 2009 Count me in. I'm a new owner of an 88 here in SoCal, and it's already struggling to restart when warm. I'd hate to see what it's like in July.
NewfoundlandVenture Posted March 13, 2009 #8 Posted March 13, 2009 Hey JB, I'm in for a set of these cables as well. I'm not sure of the specifics of what needs to be replaced, I guess I'll figure that out when I get into it. I bought my '89 last spring and went the summer with that slow cranking.... you always wonder if it just isn't going to turn over, especially when it gets cold here in the fall! You can post a reply here, or pm me, whatever is best for you. Kevin
5bikes Posted March 14, 2009 #9 Posted March 14, 2009 I found removing the shrink tubing at the cable ends and cleaning with baking soda gets the old ones back in good shape. Grease (any or dielectric) the connector and replace shrink tubing (Harbor Frt). Check the connectors at the starter solenoid on left side of the battery too, (and at the starter motor)
RedRocket Posted March 19, 2009 #10 Posted March 19, 2009 bump. Any update on new cables? It's starting to warm up here.
lonestarmedic Posted March 19, 2009 #11 Posted March 19, 2009 I am still waiting on the flag end terminals. Everything else is ready. Sorry to be picky. I just want the heavy ends so they don't bend or crack. They tell me my stuff should be here soon. I order from a place in Michigan. I am getting enough parts to make around 10 sets. JB
skydoc_17 Posted March 19, 2009 #12 Posted March 19, 2009 Hey JB, Please let me know when you get them made, I would buy a set. Sorry I didn't back to you on the connectors, as I am finding out I am "Electrally Retarded" but should be able to install the battery cables seeing as there is a bolt on each end of them! Earl

RedRocket Posted March 19, 2009 #14 Posted March 19, 2009 Thanks for th update. You can definitely count me in for a set.
NewfoundlandVenture Posted March 20, 2009 #15 Posted March 20, 2009 Thanks for the update, JB. I, as well as everyone else here I'm sure, appreciate you taking this one up. Kevin
lonestarmedic Posted March 21, 2009 #16 Posted March 21, 2009 Yup - been using them for a long time now. Never had a quality problem. I just made them send me engineering drawings to verify the thickness. Most ends are terribly thin and bend by hand. The ones they have should be a lot better. I have designed these cables with a pigtail for the ground and main fuse. I have picked up Posi-Lock splices to attach them to the factory wiring for those who don't have solder or crimp capability. Best way I could figure for a wrench only installation. I see my order was on the way today. JB

They have these nice little solder slugs that I used, they worked a treat
coltrain Posted April 6, 2009 #18 Posted April 6, 2009 Hey I too would like to get my battery cables replaced! I am a new member and new owner of an 85 VR. I dig it.
lonestarmedic Posted April 6, 2009 #19 Posted April 6, 2009 Ok - I should get a couple sets made this week. Sorry for the delay. Been making big changes and decision in our lives. Decided to start house shopping and get out of the rental place. Started back on my RN degree treck. And been putting in all the overtime and comp. time possible. I think Skydock17 gets the 1st set. Once he puts them on, and lets me know how the installation went I will ramp up and make 10-12 sets. They will be less than $40.00 including flat rate shipping to the U.S. Who knows about the snowback clan. Will figure that out later. J.B.
bongobobny Posted April 6, 2009 #20 Posted April 6, 2009 I found removing the shrink tubing at the cable ends and cleaning with baking soda gets the old ones back in good shape. Grease (any or dielectric) the connector and replace shrink tubing (Harbor Frt). Check the connectors at the starter solenoid on left side of the battery too, (and at the starter motor) The advantage of the replacement cables is that they are a thicker cable, conductor wise. This helps out the old "starting when hot" problem as heat raises wire resistance, but more strands means more "resistors" in parallel lowering the total resistance from point a to point b considerably. This results in a smaller IR drop across the cable which means more voltage to the starter motor. You are right about corrosion as it too adds resistance to the cabling resulting in less voltage to the motor...,
barend Posted April 6, 2009 #21 Posted April 6, 2009 When I made mine, I added two pigtails per side. One for accessories/secondary fuse block. Just a thought.

Like the VR as much as any bike I've owned over the past 40+ years, and want to get it in shape for a possible cross Canada tour (I am working on convincing my wife). Could you also ship to me in Ontario? Evan
RedRocket Posted April 19, 2009 #23 Posted April 19, 2009 Today was the first quite warm day down here in SoCal. I felt like I could count a few seconds between the the first and second revolutions.
Big B Posted April 26, 2009 #24 Posted April 26, 2009 count me in for a set, first ride on my new (to me) 90 venture, and she had a real tough time starting after a gas stop. pm me with the relevant info. -Bryan
