Just got robbed by some unauthorized transactions.....had to file the appropriate complaints....who knows...probably be weeks before I can think about getting my money back. If they could find this lowlife and give me about five minutes in a room with him, I would be happy. Man, there are a&^%$s out there that get pleasure out of ruining someone's day.

ToRide1 Posted February 24, 2009 #6 Posted February 24, 2009 I had a similar encounter four years ago and Paypal was telling me I owed them a few thousand dollars from some purches they say I did on Ebay and they just did not get it that we did not have an Ebay account or ever used paypal, and I told them if I hear any more about it they will be coming to West Virginia for a civil court case. Boy that fixed it and fast.

Is pay pal not suppose to be a secure and trust worthy means of making transactions AH, I thought so tooooooo.....now Im begining to wonder... I wonder if I should cancel mine out completely and not have it at all... Please do keep us posted on the outcome..and keep notes on what we will need to do if it happens to one of us. (i.e., phone numbers we need to call... etc..)
Grey Ghost Posted February 24, 2009 #12 Posted February 24, 2009 The same thing just happened to my wife's secretary to the tune of over $500. Pay Pal notified her of the upcoming charge. After confirming with her husband that he had not purchased anything thru them she notified them that it was a bogus charge and to not honor it. Three days later Pay Pal charged her account anyhow. When she contacted them trying to find out who the receipient of the money was, they told her that they could not release that information without a court order. She then reported it to the athourities. That was last week. I'll let you know the latest when I talk with her this morning. After seeing all this, I am cancelling my account. Jeff

I've never even been to California! Credit union called me a week and a half ago to see if I authorized them, and when I didn't, they registered the card as lost/stolen. The crazy thing is, I still have the card in my possession, and I only have one.

Thats why I paid them $5.00 for their security dongle that makes it impossible for this to happen. It's a keyfob that when you press the button it gives you a 6 digit number that only works for 30 seconds to get in your account. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/Marketing_CommandDriven/securitycenter/PayPalSecurityKey-outside for a link on their site about it. there are thousands of programs that run under windows that are designed to steak your paypal and credit card info so someone can take all your money. these keyfobs are the only defense agaisnt those... Or buying a Mac instead of a PC. Mac's dont have any of those viruses and trojans to steal your info. Good Luck on paypal. they are NOT a bank so they dont have to abide by federal rules and simply sack you for all the money stolen. Maybe they figured out that helping customers is more important than screwing them.

That way I can contest any payments made with the CC company. I've had to do it, and it does work. It's also a good thing to check the itemized CC statement and not just go ahead and send a payment off. I bought a set of boat parts from a supplier for $10 bucks, and they mistakenly charged me $250. If I hadn't questioned it, I'da been stuck. Another thing to be aware of is that scammers will send you a bogus bid or charge notice with bogus links. Things to look out for are that they do not use your registered name, and the HTTPS in the address. Any suspect emails you receive forward to Paypal spoof@paypal.com or Spoof@ebay.com before doing anything.

Probably was skimmed possibly a restaurant you visted where you give your card to the server and they walk away with it and they have a pocket card reader that holds the information they skim it and get your information and then do your normal charge you never know it happened and you have your card. (Or if you have a Walgreens fast pay service where they have a credit card on file someone may have breached that.) I always go with the server to where they do the credit/debit charge and make sure that doesnt happen. A common thing is to buy gift cards with a stolen credit card because they know the credit card gets shut down fast. Now they sell the gift cards for like a third of the price of the value. But if your crafty and the right friends you can have those gift cards shut down and worthless so it screws who ever bought it over. I have had my debit card info stolen even though I had the card and started buying online phone cards to sell to immigrants to call overseas very cheaply. I look every day on my account to see if there is any unusual activity and nip in the bud quick especially debit card sometimes hard to get your money back. Edited February 24, 2009 by CrazyHorse

Had a similar situation a few months ago. Some kid hacked into a local retailer's website and stole a bunch of credit card info (including mine). Rather than go on a spending spree, the kid bought a bunch of porn and had it shipped to the respective card holder's home. I got home from work one day and my wife said, "Your movies are here." Called the CC company and canceled the charges, filed a report with the county sheriff. On a good note, my wife let me keep the Playboy Magazine subscription.

Thanks for the heads up. I always worry about this sort of thing. The nice thing about using the phone one, is that it's not another thing to carry around and you always have it with you, and it's FREE!

I went to my bank first thing this morning and they are being helpful in putting a "stop payment" on those transactions and waving the fees that normally go with a stop payment. Have filed the appropriate complaint with PayPal and now have to wait until they investigate. Interestingly enough when I got home from work just now there are two emails from one of these perps that appears to have come through PayPal "reminding" me to make the payment! Think I'm gonna have to pick up one of those fobs. Didn't know of such a thing.

You'd think it would be in THEIR best interest to run a commercial site online that is secure.
