Guest scott_3fan Posted July 25, 2007 #1 Posted July 25, 2007 One of the things I really didn't care for on the first gen Ventures is the open vent over the rear cylinders. That really cooks the old jeans on the rider. I've seen some of y'alls bikes that have covers of various types in place over these vents. But I can't find any anywhere on the net. So, does anyone know if they are still available?
eagleeye Posted July 25, 2007 #2 Posted July 25, 2007 When I had my side covers off last week, I taped the vents closed. (across the inside of the vents) But, It's still too hot for me. I am going to look for some insulating tape, and add that to the inside. Steve

So, here they are. I do have to apologize as some of them are rather out of focus. I have a real POS shop camera that is new to me (freebie) and haven't got it completely figured out yet. The inserts are gray PVC fr McMaster-Carr. The insert is 1/8 thk smoked Lexan fr McM-C. The adhesive is Devcon Plastic Welder fr Wallyworld. The screws are #4, 1/2 in lg, stainless steel, self tapping screws for plastic fr McM-C. I made cardboard templates to mark the Lexan. Then cut it out w a jigsaw. Baked in the oven at 360 deg for 6-7 min and formed them over the backside of the side covers. The inserts were cut on a tablesaw and then heat formed w a Wagner paint stripper heat gun. Was it heat sheilding (legs), to keep the engine cleaner, or just to dress it up? My side covers had broken inserts that blocked the openings when I bought it. I took them out since I like to see the engine through the openings and thought it might run cooler. Since I have not ridden it yet (the carbs are being rebuilt and lots left to get road worthy) so I don't know how this will affect the driving and maintaining experience. In Oz here, we don't get a lot of really cold weather riding my way. I found that if they came opened on a hot day, I almost fried. I understand that new louvers are no longer available. I have one blade missing in one of mine. I have been contemplating a dark plastic or the like to make a blanking plate with. Maybe a piece of my old windscreen would even be ok.
