Kurt827 Posted February 20, 2009 #1 Posted February 20, 2009 Well, I finally made the plunge and bought a odyssey pc680 battery for the venture. Everything seems to be fine except, there is a lot of extra room in the battery box now. I did not get the one with the metal jacket so I don't know if that is the diffrents or if I got the wrong battery entirely. If anyone who has made the switch can let me know if this is normal or not it would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards Kurt
cecdoo Posted February 20, 2009 #2 Posted February 20, 2009 Yep thats the way they fit, you can put some foam rubber in the sides to fill in the opening and keep it from moving around. Craig
GigaWhiskey Posted February 21, 2009 #3 Posted February 21, 2009 I stuffed the fuse box in there. Holds tight.
Schlepporello Posted February 21, 2009 #4 Posted February 21, 2009 I've got the PC680 that has the metal jacket. There's no differance between the two, mine fits just as loose. I cut the box that it came in up into strips and used them to take up the space.
bongobobny Posted February 21, 2009 #5 Posted February 21, 2009 The only difference between the 680 and the 680MJ IS the metal cover, which is used as a heat shield for the battery and the reason why it is recommended for the Venture. It keeps engine heat at bay from the battery which could, over time, damage the battery...
Guest Swifty Posted February 21, 2009 #6 Posted February 21, 2009 Everything seems to be fine except, there is a lot of extra room in the battery box now. That's why I bought a PowerMax battery. http://ebatteriestogo.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=EBTG&Product_Code=12-620197 I can't figure out why this Odyssey pc680 battery is promoted so much on this website when it doesn't EVEN FIT!!!

The Oddesy 680 is promoted on this site because it works great and solves some of the problems of the 1st gen. The fit is easy to fix. RandyA
Schlepporello Posted February 21, 2009 #8 Posted February 21, 2009 I had considered looking for a larger Odessey battery to better fill the compartment. No such luck. Like was mentioned before though, it works and the size difference is easy enough to fix.

Interesting. I tried a Made-in-China UB12180 Universal AGM last summer, and it didn't work as well as the Odyssey PC680, but for $40 bucks I thought I'd give it a try... It wasn't a bad battery...it just didn't have the poop of the Odyssey. I'll probably relegate it to an emergency break away battery for the trailer. They did have another battery listed that actually was listed as a PC680 for about the same price as the PowerMax in the link. I'm wondering if the PMX is M-I-C?? The one in the link seems to be rated higher than the Odyssey, and if it's a larger battery that will fit the battery box better. It may be worth a try...
GeorgeS Posted February 21, 2009 #10 Posted February 21, 2009 As I understand it, these batteries, are just commercially sold versions, of these " Mil spec " Units that were developed for Military vehicals. I have also heard that they can be used on some small aircraft. ( If true, then they must be FAA approved also ) ( however not sure on this point ) I have been hopeing to find somebody who has worked " Motor Pool " for the Army and could verify this information. ( ie. what is Army useing on its Smaller Vehicals. for Batteries ) ??

They also do biz with the USAF so they're probably be the best source of info about mil specs. http://www.lifelinebatteries.com/
Jbo24 Posted February 26, 2009 #12 Posted February 26, 2009 The UB12180 is really meant for computer backups, emergency lighting, and other slow drain devices. I don't think it is built for the harshness of a motorcycle. Powermax is made in China. As far as I know the only Powersport batteries manufactured in the US are Odyssey and Deka-Eastpenn.
