It's finally fixed

Well after 7500 miles the Venture runs great, no thanks to Yamaha!!!

at 600 miles I picked up a miss/ rough run/ pop on accl. After 4 visits to RMC Motorcycles in Renton WA. they finally listened to what I had been telling them and replaced the #1 coil. While this did make a marked improvement It was still not running at 100 0/0.

This was after 9000 total miles and a 3500 mile 10 day trip with my brother on his HD. I don't have to tell you how embarrassing it was to barely be able to keep up with him when we we're climbing the mountain passes we rode.

So about 4 weeks ago I went to the South Seattle Sports Plaza web site and ordered the #2,3,&4 coils, Two of them we're on back order Hummmm. Yamaha do you have a coil issue???? I installed the three remaining coils. My bike runs great like it did the first 600 miles that I drove it out of the Dealership. My mileage has now come back form mid 20's up to 35MPG on the first tank.

So it only took 9900 miles and replacing all of the coils myself. RMC kept telling me that that's how they run. I called BS!!!

I belive that the #4 coil was the rest of the problem but I figured that if I am going to have to replace one I want to replace all of them. If they were easier to get to I would have gone with one at a time.

I dont have a way to secure my Lab scope and be able to watch the ignition pattern while riding to trace down the bad coil.

Man this bike runs!!! its fun to ride again!

So you are saying that it didnt get fixed by warranty? If not, do you think the area rep might listen to you and at least get your money back for the coils?

 

The bike is still under warranty and you shouldnt have to pay for anything. Some dealers are just bad as previously noted by several members.

As I recall several folks have had problems with Ignition Coils on the 2nd gen units. Ok, I don't own a 2nd gen , never worked on them.

 

As I recall, the Plug wires are and Integral part of the Coil, and cannot be replaced seperatly ??? Is this true ?? ( looking for an answer here )

 

Ok, on the 1st Gens, Very few reports of Failed Ignition coils, per se. Also, its easy to replace the plug wires, ( ie. a good thing )

 

My question, would be, --- Is it possible to Replace the Coils on a 2nd Gen, with those from a 1st Gen ( which do not fail, and are avialable cheap from Salvage bikes )

 

Has anybody, Removed, and replaced, ignition coils. on both the 1st gens, and the 2nd gens. Could the Swap be done ???? And would it work ????

Page I1 of the parts manual shows the coils, but it does not list a separate part number for the wires, so I would have to assume they are sold as one unit.

You are correct the wire is integral to the coil. 1st to 2nd interchange ???? Freebird would probably know.

I have a couple of 1st gen coils if someone wanted to try this out

1st Gen Coil Specs are Primary 2.4 to 3 Ohm, secondary 10.6 to 15.8 kOhm

 

2nd Gen Coils Specs are Primary 3.57 to 4.83 Ohm, secondary 10.71 kOhm to 14.49 kOhm

 

Since the primary Resistances aren't that far apart(3.36 Amps at the lowest Resistance vs 4 Amps at the highest of 1Gen Range), i figure that should work without frying the Igniter Box. The 1Gen's are the same as Vmax Coils and they alwas have been on the upper End when used.

 

But Pegscraper could have tested this and remembers the Facts.

Think I would be talkin to a whole lotta folks at Yamaha on this one! Since you fixed it yourself the least they could do is cover the parts.Dont think I would let them off on this one. Good Luck, Craig
