mixon Posted February 14, 2009 #1 Posted February 14, 2009 I am trying to install a CB on my 83 Venture. Ebay has a head unit, but it does not include wiring and mic. I am trying to locate whatever I need to install a CB on a bike that does not have one now. Thank you for any information you may give me. AL
bongobobny Posted February 14, 2009 #2 Posted February 14, 2009 OK first off, there are 2 different style CB's, the right one for the '83 thru 85 which consists of a controller that mounts on the fairing top above the CLAS controller, and the actual CB box which is mounted in the fairing. The '86 up is a self contained unit that is deep and has to be mounted wqhere the existing CLAS controller is and the controler is mounted above the CB. Both styles (and to make life more confusing, the 83 `- 85 has 2 different versions) are hooked up to the audio amplifier via a 6 pin DIN cable, and you hear it thru the audio system/intercom, and use your intercom mike for the CB mike. Which one are you bidding on? There is one on my watch list presently going for $36 that ends in a day or so that I was planning on sniping but if that is the one you are looking at I will not bid. OK you will need an antenna splitter, a PTT button, and the stock stereo/intercom system as well as the din cable to hook up the CB to the audio system...
friesman Posted February 14, 2009 #3 Posted February 14, 2009 I was kind of thinking of putting a cb in my 85 but it has none of the fittings either. I was thinking that there must be an aftermarket solution for this that bolts on the handlebars . Does anyone know which one might be better than any others? Or would I be better going the OEM route? Brian
bongobobny Posted February 14, 2009 #4 Posted February 14, 2009 OK I just put the first bid on the MK2 CB I am watching. J&M makes a CB unit that mounts on the handlebars. When I installed the CB o n the '84 I lucked out getting the cables I needed from Thom440 off of his parts bike. Many thanks, Thomas, it was a blessing!! If you go that route, you will need to gewt the fairing dash from a MK2 to make the installation easier than the route I went which was to cut up and fabricate the mount for the CB and put it where the 2 piece one goes on the MK1. I had to relocate the radiator surge tank for clearance. It was an involved project to say the least, but I'm glad it's done so now I can communicate with other riders...
Freebird Posted February 14, 2009 #5 Posted February 14, 2009 Yea, while I know that it's nice having everything factory, I know that I would just go with the J&M unit. It looks good and probably actually better quality. http://www.sierra-mc.com/products.asp?cat=243
