Eddie Posted February 11, 2009 #1 Posted February 11, 2009 Ive been dragging my feet on this for a long time, but people want to be able to see your company's web page. Ive in the past been a rider on other peoples sites but think its time for me to have my own. Im curious on the cost to build and host one per year. Where is the best place to trust someone to build one for you. I know Don can probably answer most of these questions for me but would like to hear from all who can help.
Midrsv Posted February 12, 2009 #2 Posted February 12, 2009 Eddie, I use 1and1.com to host my site. They are very inexpensive and have many tools to help you get your site going. My total cost for 2008 was less than $60. I get 500mb of space and 5,000 mb of traffic at no additional cost. A couple of months I've exceeded the traffic allotment and it was only a couple of dollars extra. I don't use my site to its full potential. I basically just post photos and files there for people to download and you have to know the link to get to it. Something like this: http://www.traynorphoto.com/07venture/ One of these days I may get around to developing the full site. Dennis

Eddie - what's your business? Will you be selling from the site? Will it be graphic intensive? WIll you be hosting any sound files like MP3's? All of this stuff will determine what kind of site would be best.... Shep
usnmustang Posted February 12, 2009 #4 Posted February 12, 2009 My Father does web design. He has done a couple cool ones including author Stephen Coonts (Flight of the Intruder) site http://www.coonts.com/. He can be reached at info@rogwebs.com. Tell him I sent you (I know that sounds like a line). Jim
scotty Posted February 12, 2009 #5 Posted February 12, 2009 As far as cost,I can't help much there. My brother in law's company deals with that stuff, so for christmas he bought me the domain and keeps it up. All he wants in return is more articles. (he is almost as warped as me) As far as building the site, it's not that hard if you keep it simple. I use go live and it will do a whole bunch of cool stuff that I know nothing about. I keep mine simple 'cause I'm not smart enough to make it cool. http://www.delusional-mechanic.com/
Gray Ghost Posted February 12, 2009 #6 Posted February 12, 2009 I use these folks for my website http://www.nomonthlyfees.com/. Of course asking what is the best website hosting service is like asking which Venture model is best. You really need to figure out what you want to do, what your needs will be and then find the one that will work best for you.
Condor Posted February 12, 2009 #7 Posted February 12, 2009 I think it depends on how sophisticated you want the site to be. If it just going to be for information then you could probably do it yourself. If you're looking for a lot of pazazz it will probably be better to have someone do it for you. I put together my biz site using Front Page. Started with FP98, and I think I've been using FP2002 for a while now. It's a wyswig.. 'what you see is what you get' type editor, and operates like any word processoing editor. It does all the html coding in the background. The cost to register your site depends on who you deal with. I use http://www.internic.net/ for www.Cast-Aways.com , and it runs $99 bucks for 5 years. You'll also need to find a Host for your site. I use Earthlink.net and it's $14.95 per month. You can find cheaper hosts, but I've had several over the years and Earthlink is by far the best in the customer service dept. Hope this helps.
zlMark Posted February 13, 2009 #8 Posted February 13, 2009 Don't get fooled by the outragious claims of disk space and bandwidth when using shared hosting. You get what you pay for! I've had my web site with 3 different hosts over the past 2 years. Most of these Hosting companies do oversell hosting. The host I'm with now has been great and has a no oversell promise. Sure they cost a little more, and my disk and bandwidth quota's aren't as high, but at least now i'm getting fast page generations and no more vbulletin error emails(I'll bet don has had his share of these!). Most of all the tech support is actually helpful! Keep in mind, if you don't require much bandwidth and disk space and go with one of these cheap lousy providers, your customers will suffer the slow page generations and site availablility errors. Good luck!
Eddie Posted February 15, 2009 Author #9 Posted February 15, 2009 thanks guys , this gave some places to start
