frankc Posted February 10, 2009 #1 Posted February 10, 2009 I was wondering if it's a good idea to hide an extra key on the bike somewhere? How many of you do this now? It sure would come in handy if you lost the original while you were out somewhere. Thanks
CMIKE Posted February 10, 2009 #2 Posted February 10, 2009 I have thought about it...but where do you get them...I have seen blanks on Ebay but are they correct blanks. If I could find a source for the correct blank...I would have one cut locally. My dealer is 2.5 hours away...not much worth the effort to go there...
jrcain32 Posted February 10, 2009 #3 Posted February 10, 2009 I keep one in my wallet. That won't do you any good if you lock your wallet up but I hardly ever do that.
BoomerCPO Posted February 10, 2009 #4 Posted February 10, 2009 I used a small piece of aluminum tape and taped a spare key behind the license plate. I know other riders who have taped their spare key to the underside of their seat. Boomer.....who gets lost but has never lost a key.
Blackjack Posted February 10, 2009 #5 Posted February 10, 2009 I keep a "spare" on my regular key-ring with my other keys, either in my pocket or attached to a belt loop with a spring clip. The Venture key is on a ring all by itself, with the addition of a small flashlight. I've always got an extra key handy and I've always got a flashlight! TERRY
hayes Posted February 10, 2009 #6 Posted February 10, 2009 I keep my extra key on a seperate key ring in my pocket so it's always handy. Dennis
sarges46 Posted February 10, 2009 #7 Posted February 10, 2009 If alone....my spare is at home. When Marilyn and I are riding together, I have her spare in my pocket and she has mine in her jacket.
friesman Posted February 10, 2009 #8 Posted February 10, 2009 I was wondering if it's a good idea to hide an extra key on the bike somewhere? How many of you do this now? It sure would come in handy if you lost the original while you were out somewhere. Thanks I went to my locksmith and he found a flat key that fits in my wallet, so I carry it everywhere. Brian
ToRide1 Posted February 10, 2009 #9 Posted February 10, 2009 I keep a spare key in boot laces so its on the inside of them and you are not going anywhere with your boots are you.
BigBoyinMS Posted February 10, 2009 #10 Posted February 10, 2009 Curtis blank YM63 and Ilco X248 I also did a search on key blanks once and found that an older Toyota blank is the same.
ronhenry4 Posted February 10, 2009 #11 Posted February 10, 2009 I keep one in the small square compartment in the saddle bag unless i have a rider then it goes in there pocket.. i figure its cheaper to fix a lock on a saddle bag if i lock it in there than to call a locksmith
Cerviperus Posted February 10, 2009 #12 Posted February 10, 2009 I had a driver backrest on my RSV, that had a zipper so you could remove the foam if you needed to modify it, or replace it. I had a spare key stuffed all the way to one corner under the foam. My new bike is no different, nor is my car. There's always a spare key somewhere. My parents have also done this for years, and so far, no stolen vehicles. Unlike the RSV (which was fairly easy to get to), none of them are ever convenient. Half of the time I forget where they are and have to spend 10+ minutes looking for them, even knowing they're there.
Cougar Posted February 10, 2009 #13 Posted February 10, 2009 The Basic Blank is $6.00 at the dealer. (not the $45.00 one) like you have now. I just went through this. cuz I have sold my saddle bags and I got a extra key made for them for the new owner. even had my local hardware store cut it for me. I myself have 3 extra keys for the bike. Jeff
RedRider Posted February 10, 2009 #14 Posted February 10, 2009 Find a black framing member and tape it there with electrical tape. It is virtually invisible and you don't need to worry about locking it in a trunk/saddlebag. Just remember where you put it. Don't ask me why I know that. RR
BuddyRich Posted February 10, 2009 #15 Posted February 10, 2009 I keep a spare on my truck key ring. Have the Star key cover and just leave the key in it. Most people don't even know its there.
