BEER30 Posted February 24, 2009 #51 Posted February 24, 2009 I plan to bum a beer off of stardbog if it's as hot as it was last year! Get in line after me there , Dear Buddy ! Just set the shop's calender yesterday in stone , being that Thursday prior to MD to start of our weeks vacation . Tentative plans to make MD , then to Red Bay Alabama , then back home . Beer24/7 will attend MD if all goes well . No maintenance needed as for now , but always will provide a give out a helping hand or be a pest , whichever comes first ! BEER30
bongobobny Posted February 24, 2009 #52 Posted February 24, 2009 Just out of curiosity is there an Ontario group forming up to go to md and if so when and were. If I can swing it to go (and beleive me I am working on it ) I would sure like to hook up with such a group if I may. Ben, we are leaving on Friday and staying Saturday night as well. You are more than welcome to hook up with us if you like.
Squidley Posted February 24, 2009 #53 Posted February 24, 2009 Squidley - I seem to remember you giving your drill a workout and needing a battery re-charge from drilling out exhausts. Can we provide a second battery or something? You know I just bought a new Ryobi with 2 batteries, we should be good. But thanks for thinking of me
ibents Posted February 25, 2009 #54 Posted February 25, 2009 Just out of curiosity is there an Ontario group forming up to go to md and if so when and were. If I can swing it to go (and beleive me I am working on it ) I would sure like to hook up with such a group if I may. I was wondering the same thing, as you see I live in Windsor and would be crossing into Detroit, I don't know how many would be coming down this far. Are the Guys from Brantford, Kitchener, Guelph, London going over the bridge at Sarnia?? If so then its possible we could meet up on I75 somewhere. There is lots of time yet and I was going to bring it up nearer to the date...which I probably still will...but it would be good to get some kind of idea. Ian
saddlebum Posted February 25, 2009 #55 Posted February 25, 2009 Ben, we are leaving on Friday and staying Saturday night as well. You are more than welcome to hook up with us if you like. I like the offer Bob I will be keeping it mind I have to see if I can get the friday off.
big mike Posted March 19, 2009 #56 Posted March 19, 2009 I would like to get my carbs sync'd. I bought this bike in January of 2008, and though I am impressed with the bike, I have read some things that make me wonder if it is really in sync. Is it possible that there may be more hidden power and torque?!!! Plus I don't think the previous owner did anything but ride it, and I haven't sync'd them since i've owned it. Anyway, regardless of if there is more the bike has to offer or not I would like to actually get to know some of you guys more than just on a computer. Big Mike......who's anxiously awaiting M. D. 2009!!!
Squidley Posted March 20, 2009 #57 Posted March 20, 2009 Seeing this is back up top.... I have an idea that I'm going to toss out here. We know that there are a few folks that bust their humps off working on Maintenance day. I said that was going to change for me and I'm going to keep that promise to myself. I have just bought a brake bleeder vaccum kit and it works great. I will step up and say that I will be willing to do the fluid changes on the bikes during maintenance day. I also like the idea that has been toss around about stations for specific repairs. It wont be long before it's here so we should get an idea on how we want to run it
V7Goose Posted May 10, 2009 Author #58 Posted May 10, 2009 OK, time is getting close, so I thought I'd resurrect this old thread and do a short recap on the planning... CARB SYNC As expected, the most common item mentioned has been carb sync. We will definitely try to figure out how to designate an area for that. I am sure we will have plenty of sync tools and volunteers to handle all comers, so no need to bring any supplies or anything for this simple task. TIRES There have been a couple of mentions about tire changes. This won't need a lot of planning, but we will be limited to jacks and room in garage. I guess we can just stack up any tires on a first-come basis and work through them like that. They are not tough to do, so we shouldn't have any problem getting them done. I will have rim protectors, tire lube, and bead-seating aids, and Don has the tire machine. The only supplies we will need are your own tires and Locktite for front rotor bolts if doing a front tire. LIGHTS/POWER OUTLETS/AUDIO JACKS/MISC ELECTRICAL This work is USUALLY pretty simple, but may or may not take some time, depending on details. Likewise, it is a little hard to plan without the details of each specific job. First, you will need to have all of your supplies, including wire, connectors, switches, etc. If you need any help determining exactly what you need, feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to help you through it. Another good option would be to just post the question in a new thread and I'm sure you will get more than enough responses! Fluid Changes Very simple, but make sure you bring all your own fluids! Clutch Spring Upgrade No one has yet mentioned this, but since it is so simple I thought I'd throw it out as a suggestion. If you think you may have some clutch slip starting, this might be a great time to solve that. I suggest the PCW spring upgrade kit (no need to buy any replacement friction plates other than the one that comes with the kit). That will have everything you need. Any other miscellaneous tasks we can evaluate on a case-by-case basis. I'm sure we can handle all the simple ones, like mounting a hitch, and there will be plenty of people to help with advice and planing on the more complex tasks that are better left for another time and place. Don't be shy with any other questions or suggestions. Just remember, maintenance day tasks should be fairly simple maintenance items or enhancements, NOT major repair or modifications. Looking forward to seeing y'all soon, Goose
Steve S Posted May 10, 2009 #59 Posted May 10, 2009 I have a question about the facilities. I know some people camp at Don's, but the rumor I heard was that last year Mini-Muffin set up and open air shower for the men to use. If this is the case this year I am gonna be one smelly dude when I get back home....
gunkylump Posted May 10, 2009 #60 Posted May 10, 2009 This is probably a bit early, since maintenance day is still so many months off, but maybe we can start the discussions now and just bump the thread later as the date gets closer? I do not want to over-complicate things, but it seemed to me that we could have gotten a lot more done last year with just a little more organization - we spent half the day just milling around before we even started work! Of course, not everyone was there to work on bikes. I think that, at most, 1/3 of the attendees actually wanted to do that - the rest were just there to meet and socialize. Nothing wrong with that, but if we missed out on some who really needed something done, I'm sorry. I'd like to start collecting a wish-list of what folks would like to do this year. Just post away here. Maybe we can group them into three or four main tracks for us to organize around on THE day. For example, one item I KNOW will be a main track is carb syncing; always lots of interest in having that done. I am not sure what other subjects will be of primary interest this year. Another item I can suggest might be tires - I know Don has a tire changer, and I am happy to change or balance tires. If you think you need new skins around that time, either bring 'em or drop-ship them to Don's and we can get 'er done at no cost to you. So that's a start - let's hear what else you might be thinking about for maintenance day. Goose I know that I could use a carb sync.....I've got the "vibes" when I accelerate. randy:bowdown:
davecb Posted May 11, 2009 #61 Posted May 11, 2009 Seeing as all the men will be working on the bikes.....Shouldn't the woman set up a wash and wax your bike line?????:stirthepot::whistling:

Can't wait to see where this goes. Hope your life insurance is paid up. Ian
saddlebum Posted May 11, 2009 #63 Posted May 11, 2009 Got the day time off so I will be there and if there is some realstate left for a small tent i will be soft walling it.
Hummingbird Posted May 11, 2009 #64 Posted May 11, 2009 I Can offer help for electrical wiring. Installing AUX plugs for MP3 / GPS. Back-Off brake modulators, DC outlets in trunk, Or Whatever electric needs are. And Yeah I Work for Heineken.:rotfl: I would like to get a aux. fuse block installed for future lighting etc. btw - what size/colors wire would be needed ? I would be happy to supply wire for more than myself.
Freebird Posted May 11, 2009 #65 Posted May 11, 2009 Got the day time off so I will be there and if there is some realstate left for a small tent i will be soft walling it. No problem with tent space. Bring it on.
Freebird Posted May 11, 2009 #66 Posted May 11, 2009 I would like to get a aux. fuse block installed for future lighting etc. btw - what size/colors wire would be needed ? I would be happy to supply wire for more than myself. Probably better to post that question in the tech section where it will likely be seen by more folks. I would say number 14 wire though. Colors really aren't that important. I like to use red for hot and green for black but Yamaha doesn't use the same color codes as most of us do so the important thing is that YOU know what colors you used.
Yama Mama Posted May 11, 2009 #67 Posted May 11, 2009 I have a question about the facilities. I know some people camp at Don's, but the rumor I heard was that last year Mini-Muffin set up and open air shower for the men to use. RandyR Posted May 11, 2009 #68 Posted May 11, 2009 I have purchased a Baron's Tach and need to install it to the coils. Seems to be a good candidate project for maintenance day. Also want to learn to use the Carbtune I have. I'll want to help (hopefully someone else) pull a 2nd gen rear wheel, change a tire, and grease the shaft & splines.
V7Goose Posted May 12, 2009 Author #69 Posted May 12, 2009 Hey Don, do you have an inch pound torque wrench, or do I need to bring mine in case we have clutches to do? I assumed you had one, but thought I should verify that instead of the chance it. Goose
Freebird Posted May 12, 2009 #70 Posted May 12, 2009 No, all I have is ft.lbs. If you don't want to tote yours though, I will pick one up. I'm thinking I may do my own also.
V7Goose Posted May 12, 2009 Author #71 Posted May 12, 2009 Glad I asked! There is always room for one more tool somewhere! I'll do my best to remember to toss it in. Goose
stardbog Posted May 12, 2009 #72 Posted May 12, 2009 I would like to get a aux. fuse block installed for future lighting etc. btw - what size/colors wire would be needed ? I would be happy to supply wire for more than myself. I Would say 16 AWG will be more than enough for most applications, as passing lamps, and DC Power outlet ( Not cigaret lighter). For LED lighting 22AWG is pleny.
V7Goose Posted May 12, 2009 Author #73 Posted May 12, 2009 (edited) I would like to get a aux. fuse block installed for future lighting etc. btw - what size/colors wire would be needed ? I would be happy to supply wire for more than myself. The wire size for a fuse block depends on the total electrical load you will attach to that block, along with the length of the wires. But since a bike is kinda small and most wire runs will be 6' or less, we can ignore that most of the time. In general, 16 AWG wire is good for 15 amps and 18 AWG is good for 10 amps. So the wire you use to feed the fuse block needs to be big enough to handle the TOTAL of all the fuses you put in the fuse block. For example, if you are going to have only thee 5A fuses, you can feed it with 16 AWG wire, but if you are going to put in three 10 amp fuses, you will need to feed it with 14 AWG. Here is a link that has a couple of handy charts. You will notice that the recommended wire size drops a lot for very short runs, but you are always better off to be conservative! http://www.tessco.com/yts/industry/products/itm/automotive/get_wired.html And don't forget to add an inline fuse to the feed wire that is equal to or less than the size you calculate for the total load (the amps you used to choose the size of wire). Always remember that fuses are there to protect the WIRE and prevent fires, NOT to protect the load. Goose Edited May 13, 2009 by V7Goose more info
whozleft Posted May 13, 2009 #74 Posted May 13, 2009 I am on the list to have my seat re-worked while I'm there, but would also appreciate someone doing a carb synch for me, or at least getting mine checked. I am also willing to help wherever I can. Thanks.
Carbon_One Posted May 13, 2009 #75 Posted May 13, 2009 Anyone bringing a cb antenna tuner? I think a few of us could benefit from having their antennas tuned. Would like mine checked since it's been replaced once. Larry
