5bikes Posted February 7, 2009 #1 Posted February 7, 2009 It's kind of a pain to add oil by removing the 2 covers and then the oil cap to add oil. I'm thinking of eliminating the cap (or drilling a hole in it) and running a funneled hose outside the covers. But it has to look decent. Has anyone done something like this? Maybe I should change to nickname to Mr. Mod?
mraf Posted February 7, 2009 #2 Posted February 7, 2009 I would be concerned about oil contamination when riding unless you cap it somehow. But it should work otherwise. A small enough funnel could be incorporated to show through the sidecover. The paint that is made for plastics anymore adheres good so camouflaging the funnel top shouldn't be to hard. How about useing a threaded pipe{same threads as oil cap} bent so as to exit the side cover with a rubber plug. The kind that you tighten useing a T handle. My 464 International uses this kind of system to plug the oil filler hole. I've never had to replace it, works great. Mummm, I can see it now more crome. Have to agree with you about removing BS just to add oil after oil change.
Ga Dawg Posted February 7, 2009 #3 Posted February 7, 2009 Be careful!!! There may be some engine blowby on those cylinders and may shoot oil out the filler tube if not sealed off tight. Good Luck!!!
GeorgeS Posted February 8, 2009 #4 Posted February 8, 2009 I have never had to " add " any oil between oil changes. I'm sort of at a loss as to why you even bring this up. ???
bobcat Posted February 8, 2009 #5 Posted February 8, 2009 I agree with George S....this shouldn't be an issue..I'd be more concerned why you're adding oil between oil changes...
5bikes Posted February 8, 2009 Author #6 Posted February 8, 2009 No I haven't had to add oil between changes. But if you had to... Or were out on the road. Or just regular changes. This is the only bike out of 24 I've had that the filler hole was not accessible. Also the cross bar is in the way requiring a long funnel. I carry a paper funnel ($.25 for 3 at Harbor Freight). Yes it will have to be capped. Over a 100k miles these covers will have to come off at least 33 times, then loosing screws, breaking tabs, stressing the plastic causing cracks... Looking for options, ideas, to make this easier. Think positive!! Wouldn't a good idea posted here helping others be nice?
timk Posted February 8, 2009 #7 Posted February 8, 2009 At a ride in,we had a bike low on oil,no funnel. Got a envelope, tore a corner off,presto funnel.
