After reading the responses I have to wonder just WHAT are they are smoking!!!

Those gentlemen are correct. A case in point is a certain computer we have all read about. It wasn't really on fire. It was just over-worked and vomited all the magic smoke. The melting is a result of the exothermic reaction of the smoke particles with the PVC compound insulating the wires.
