Murphster Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Thanks again for the input on a trunk rack. I'm getting one. Now, what about bags for it. Had a trunk rack bag on my GW 1500 way back when but can't remember the brand. I'm looking at the Star model but wonder if anyone has something they like better. Any input appreciated.
99silver Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 The Yamaha one is pretty, but I use a dry sack that is used for kayaking and it is 100% waterproof. I just use a couple of bungee cords.
SteveP Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 (edited) I have the Saddlemen Stallion bag. It's made of heavy waterproof treated nylon. It has a nice attachment system built in (D rings along the bottom edges), a bungee-web for quickly stowing a jacket or sweatshirt, and a decent amount of storage. I've had it along for 3,000-mile trips and have not Brend disappointed. Every Saddlemen product I've ever had has been top-notch. Edited February 5, 2009 by SteveP
Squidley Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Kuryakyn has some nice bags, I have had a few of them. http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/5/scID/2/IMID/342

Cerviperus Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I went out and bought a generic waterproof duffel at Wal Mart and strapped it on with bungees. Served it's purpose just fine.
royalstarjac Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 This one is the same as the Yamaha(Star) bag, made by the same co. at half the price. 46.95. I own one and I like it. They also make the trunk liner and saddlebag liners. I own those also. Same quality as Yammie, half the price. A no brainer in my book.-Jack http://www.bestemusa.com/product_info.php?cPath=8_71&products_id=198
Guest Saddletramp Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I have a Kuryaken that is called their Deluxe Convertible Luggage Rack Bag. It has its own self contained weather cover which stows away inside itself. Not to large so that you won't be overloading the recommended weight limits for the trunk lid. It has self contained bungees and velcro straps. Short and sweet, I like it!!! This can be seen in the JP catalog on pg.294. They advertise it to fit GL models but it fits the Yamaha stock rack also.
birin Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I am thinking about a BOSS BAG the 67S http://www.bossbags.com/trunkbags.html I have a midnight with studded seats and studded tank bib etc - so I thought this would be a good fit.
Guest Saddletramp Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Nice looking bags. Do they come with a weather cover? Leather is grand until it gets wet.
KAWoodworth Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Check out www.wingstuff.com. I bought my heated clothes there so they send me an email flyer all the time. They had a trunk bag on sale for 34.99 half price. I got the bag last week and couldn't believe how nice it was for only 35 bucks. It even came with a rain cover and has velcro straps to attach it to the trunk rack.
hig4s Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I use this Tourmaster on mine,, http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?productid=141&cat=32
Two Tone White Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 (edited) I'm looking at the Star model but wonder if anyone has something they like better. Any input appreciated. I've tried them all. Your best bet for the $$ and weather protection is getting any of the non-motorcycle-specific dry bags from Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops or Gander or some similar outfitter. I found a waterproof tackle bag with a rigid bottom at Cabela's which is a perfect fit for the rack. They have similar bags for hunting, camping, backpacking, fishing, etc. Usually less expensive than moto-brand bags and better made. Good luck. Edited May 3, 2010 by Two Tone White
Silver Bullet Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I use the T-bag.. fits my harley rack perfect. got another that fits my passenger seat also. when my wife don't go with me...that is....
Murphster Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 Thanks again for the suggestions and comments. Makes buying one an educated choice rather than chance.
Squidley Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Murph, The Kuryakyn does have a rain cover that is installed in the bag, just wanted to make sure you knew that
ToRide1 Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I'm told that Bestem is the same company that makes the bags for Yamaha and the trunk bag fits the rack perfectly and they make saddle bag & trunk liners also at a bargain price.
k7mdl Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 On my '07 trunk rack, I use a Dowco Iron Rider bag. Self supporting with rain cover, it fits the rack curves well enough. http://www.motorcycle.com/products/iron-rider-luggage-from-dowco-3906.html I am not sure which of the 3 models shown I have. With mine expanded (ends unzipped) it just touches the antennas. Zip in, it just overhangs the trunk rack. Because it is self supporting, it does weigh a bit or pure soft bags. but not bad. - Mike
birin Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 If you need rain covers for your leather bags (like the BOSS bag I am hoping to buy for my trunk luggage rack)- check out the T-BAG company accessories. You can find a variety of rain covers for your leather bags. Birin http://www.tbags.com/products.aspx?CategoryID=11 Nice looking bags. Do they come with a weather cover? Leather is grand until it gets wet.
Mover Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I use this Tourmaster on mine,, http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?productid=141&cat=32 Are the hooks built into the bag sufficient to hold it on the trunk rack? Do you have the Yamaha trunk rack? Thanks Mover
awsmsrv Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 This is the one I've got. Love it. Comes with a rain cover. Find it here. http://www.kuryakyn.com/Kimages/item/MainProduct/4142-1.jpg
OutlawRider Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 We have the Bestem set for sadddlebags, trunk liner and rack back. We love them. When we get to where we are going all four bags have the carry handles for easy unloading. All the bags are built just like the star bags and the rack bag has several outside pockets. It has velcro straps for attaching it to the rack but I still put a couple of bungies on it. I always over tie thinks to be sure nothing comes loose.
Bummer Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 The Bestem trunk bag looks like the current Star Line bag, which looks like the old original VentureLine bag from the First Gen with three outside pockets added. I've been using an original VentureLine bag since the early nineties. It's still a great trunk bag. The Star bag mentions a rain cover, the Bestem does not. Mine does not have a rain cover. Since I use it for our rain suits and a soft cooler most of the time that's not an issue, though it went all the way across Nebraska in the driving rain without leaking.
Yamaman Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 For those on a budget, this looks big and roomy with some nice features including a rain cover. All for only $35! http://wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/3_Featured_GL1500_Accessories_GL1500_Parts/20281_Deluxe_Luggage_Rack_Bag_w_Rain_Cover_SUPER_SALE/ Wish they would show a pic from the back and one with it open.
