Somebody tell me all the negative reasons why I should not dump my dsl and go satellite for my ISP. My only source of internet is Frontier dsl my phone provider. No other source exist other then satellite and dial up which I am on now.I have had nothing but problems with my dsl connections for 2 years and tech support is no help. When it runs good it downloads at 1200kb but slows down to a crawl 37kb yesterday. This happens at some point almost daily. Now I have a new problem it's totally dead, gone, out of service for the third weekend in a row.I had a long conversation with customer service and tech support yesterday morning. they offered a one time only $40 credit a months service fee but had no explanation for the failures.Every week when I call tech support I ask the same question. Is anybody else in the state of WV having a problem and the answer is NO nothing reported but my neighbors are complaining to.The phone company has retired all the people that knowed what they were doing and layed off the rest. Also no field service available on weekends M-F only. Just had to vent I'm on Ramona's labtop on dialup. My contract for dsl will be up in April for renewal.

Well, it sounds like going to Satilite service is the answer for your area.

I guess I would try to find some folks who are useing the different Sat service's that are avialable, discuss with them as to which is best.

I think your on the right track

I know it's not good for gaming so my son would be pi$$$$ but streaming video or normal surfing might be ok. I hope some of our members here may have experience with satellite internet and can report.I have 5 computers using my wifi connection so dial up is out.

Dish,DirrectTV, and HughsNet, all three use Wild blue as a provider, that do not advertise that, but they do. I have Dish as a ISP Sat. and use DirectTV for my TV`s. They have a threshhold for down loads depending on the package that you get. the only reason I know this is that it started running real slow so I called service, that is when the young lady told me we were over our threshold for that billing period, they failed to tell us that when we got the service. the only other problem is that if it storms real bad or the cloud cover is real thick, we will loose service. But it about our only option besides dial up. all in all its pretty good. We also tried the ATT Aircard ( wireless like a cell phone ) very slow, used it a week and told them it was junk.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Hughesnet sucks we had it for 6 years it was good for 4 years the it got as slow as dial up and they could care less. Tech support even if you could understand the language the tech was speaking was worthless. Its always the hardware but they would come check it and it was fine many times. The last 2 years 37kb would be considered good and if you download anything then they put you on restricted access so you have about 10 kb.

We went to alltel wirless cards I have two one runs the house with 4 people using it and the other I keep with me for access where

ever I am. Both cost about the same as hughes junk. We have clearwire at the office and it works good.

When I first moved to Ohio, satellite was my only choice for high speed so I went with it. I truly hated it. Speeds were very erratic and never really great. Much better than dial-up and if those were my only choices, I would still have the satellite. I have dsl now though and it is a million times better.

I am using HugesNet right now and have for a year without any problems. Having built in the country and not wanting a telephone line anymore, this was the best solution. The phone cards cost as much and since I used them (Sprint) for work before retiring I wanted something better. At the very beginning of using HughesNet, it seemed slow until a friend (read geek) came over and cleaned up my computer. I now see no difference with the Road Runner we had in Charlotte.

I live out in the country where it was SLOW dialup or Sat. I have Wild Blue through Dish. Equipment was cheaper than Hughs Net. I don't do a great deal on line, so speed has not been to bad. Only downside is weather. A storm between here and satelite will result in no internet. Usually doesn't last long but is a little annoying. I have notice this usually happens at the last few minutes of a Ebay auction I am in.

I talked to a cellular tech that sad 3G EVDO was coming soon. I might just wait and see for now. I just got service back at 500K but did anybody notice that ICE storm coming?

Sat has way too much latency in it. Games are unplayable. Remote access stinks. And you'll get way too many time outs. I have a brand new hughes.net on my roof from about 4 months ago. Canceled it after 30 days. Find somebody that's doing radio out there. Radios work just about as well as dsl and sometimes better if your at the 15k ft limit on DSL. If your set on trying Hughes net though give me a holler. I'll sell the whole thing for 150 plus shipping. It'll cost you over 500 for them to come out and install it. Then you only get back about 199 if you cancel in the first 30 days.

Wild blue sucks, I have had it for 3-4 years now and it has to be maybe one step better than dial up, but that isn't saying to much for it,500k down and less than 100k upload after you wait 10 to 20 sec ping time.Cost me like $350 to get it started and $49.95 a month.Rain and snow will kill it and then sometime out of the blue you will have to reboot the system to get it going again,Dont waste your money.I just hope soon i can get dsl.:080402gudl_prv:

I guess I will wait. I was on a two year waiting list just to get dsl. I have had it for two years now and I guess they need to make some improvements. I got the max limit up to 3M download but I'm 12 miles from the CO so I only get 1.2M down and 364K upload. When it works no problem but It's going down hill fast for some reason.Phone and dsl package is only $105 a month. It's only money right?

I would be tempted to tell them that if they can't make it right and function the way it's supposed to, that I would lodge a complaint with the state agancy that regulates them and with the FCC while I was at it. Stay after them, till they fix it.

Called tech support again for the 4th time since Friday. Dsl went out at midnight. They said you already have a trouble ticket for Monday repair. We havent fixed it yet. I said then why did it come back up and work for 8 hrs Sunday afternoon. I will call the Public Service Commission but for now I'm wearing tech support out.My snr (signal to noise ratio) never changes. That tells me my connections are good got to be a problem their not telling me about but the bill keeps coming every month.I'm back on dialup at 50.6K.

I'm in Southern California and I use Wild Blue. I work from home running flight operations on the East Coast. Run a real-time flight tracking program with a 15sec refresh, constant email, constant internet weather feed from 2 sources at same time as well as my usual web surfing, personal email etc. I have no problem with this system. Not as good as cable but WAY better than dial-up. Not sure of comparison to DSL as I have never used DSL. I also do WOW and while the response it not as great as I would like (is it ever?) I play with no major problems.

I got it with my Direct TV package so cost is not bad. There is a maximum monthly download but I have not hit it yet. Customer service sucks but if I have a real problem I have "discovered" the direct phone number of the president of Direct TV and we have become "phone buddies" so my problems get resolved VERY quickly now (hehehe).

The only other note is that the upload speed is not quick enough to use something like Vonage, Skype and others. They usually recommend something like a minimum of 400 and Wild Blue only handles about 250. You can't tap if for an internet based phone service.

Have you checked to see if Wireless Internet is available. I live in a small town in North Texas and my only choice was Dailup, Satelite or PC Phone card. Had the AT&T phone card and it was OK, but not fast enough for me. Finally wireless became available and I love it. It is not affected by weather because it connects to a tower, not a satelite. Towers have about 10 mile radius so it might not be available there. Do a search for Wireless internet Providers.
