All you do is unbolt one set of calipers and bolt on the others. Also, you need to swap the master cylinder from a newer Roadstar. The style matches our stock ones, but it has a 14mm piston instead of the stock 5/8" one, and it works much better with the R1 calipers. Then bleed out the lines and you're done. For a finishing touch, get some R1 floating rotors too, but they're not absolutely necessary. Buy used parts on ebay or somewhere, then sell off your old parts, and you'll have hardly anything in the swap, and you'll get brakes that you can operate with two fingers. R1 rotors can be used?
pegscraper Posted January 26, 2009 #27 Posted January 26, 2009 R1 rotors can be used? From certain years, yes. I don't know all the years though. Just get ones with six mounting bolts. IIRC, some of them have five, and of course those wouldn't fit. Rotors from an R1 will fit, as well as an R6, FJR, Roadstar, Roadliner, Stratoliner, VMX, and probably others too. They're all the same part. The only difference is that some are solid and some are floating types. Same with the calipers too, but the R1/R6 will be the cheapest and easiest to find. Now the newest models of R1/R6 have changed the calipers again and they will not fit. The previous style from a few years ago is what to look for. The M/C pretty well needs to come from a Roadstar. Ones from other models would fit and work fine, but the looks and style of the thing will be different from our stock ones. The Roadstar one will match. Just make sure it has 14mm cast into the front of it next to the sight window instead of 5/8. Newer Roadstars will have the 14mm piston, older ones have the 5/8".
